Blast of Stunning Information
By JackMetal
This book is pedal to the metal from the opening pages and all the way through. I've been reading books on the NWO for years and was still stunned by some of the information I hadn't come across before. Giuliani writes very well but the book is set up differently than others since there's no table of contents.

I've been listening to The Truth Hertz radio show on Oracle Broadcasting and Charles never fails to blow me away with new information I just can't get on other alternative radio shows.

EARTH IS BETRAYED. It’s a violent, competitive universe. And our home planet would have been an easy conquest, if not for the efforts of the Colonial Union ― the human spacefaring military organization that has defended our world for generations. But the Colonial Union kept many secrets from humanity, until John Perry revealed them to Earth’s billions. The CU has fought an endless series of secret wars on (it claims) Earth’s behalf, while manipulating humankind into providing an unlimited supply of recruits who never return from space. And, it turns out, there are alien races that seem inclined toward peace and trade instead of battle. Indeed, Earth has now been invited to join a new alliance of multiple worlds ― an alliance against the Colonial Union. For the shaken and uncertain people of Earth, the path ahead is far from clear. With that choice hanging in the balance, managing the CU’s survival won’t be easy, either. It will take diplomatic finesse, political cunning . . . and a brilliant “B-Team,” centered on the resourceful Lieutenant Harry Wilson ― a team ready to deal with the unexpected things the universe throws at you when you’re struggling to preserve the unity of the human race.

From Booklist
Sort of a mixed bag here from the author of Redshirts (2012) and other fine sf novels. Scalzi’s writing is as readable as ever, but the story—set in the universe of his Old Man’s War (2004)—is a bit unfocused. But that’s probably unavoidable, given that the novel began life as a 13-part online serial. Here’s the premise: the Colonial Union is on the outs from planet Earth, the union’s big secret—that it has used humanity as a sort of factory for its soldiers—having recently been revealed. An allied group of alien races, the Conclave, is courting humanity, offering safety in their vast numbers, but this could spell disaster for the CU. Each of the book’s 13 interconnected stories adds a piece to the picture, using multiple points of view to move the narrative forward. Readers expecting a straightforward sequel to Old Man’s War and its follow-ups may be disappointed, but any new novel from the extremely talented Scalzi is always good news, and this one, despite its experimental feel and shifting narrative, is one more proof that he’s an unqualified A-lister in the genre. --David Pitt

And the ending is...?
By Karl Katzke
Note: Slight spoiler.

OK, we've got another Old Man's War novel! Great! It's a serialized novel, which is a neat new thing, which incentivizes coherent beginnings and endings to volumes. Although some of us who like their novels, even if they read like collections of short stories, to be in one chunk, because we read it straight through in one sitting. So we wait for the book edition to come out. Also great! Except that it's an unsatisfying read because there's all this awesome intrigue and problem solving and IT DOESN'T GO ANYWHERE EXCEPT A POTENTIALLY EARTH-SHATTERING KABOOM. It's like there's another story that was supposed to wrap up all of the plot lines that got started, and it got left out in a giant editing mistake.

So, great story, great universe, I loved some of the lines, and this is very much the "New" (post-Fuzzy) Scalzi who lets his sense of humor out and isn't trying too hard to become an established sci-fi writer. But, one star off, because Scalzi accidentally the.

(Yes, that was on purpose.)

This is a volume not a complete novel.
By Michael Haspert
I enjoyed reading Scalzi's humorous pacing and smart-assed aliens but my joy diminished as I watched the pages-remaining shrink until I finally realized that this was not going to wrap up in one book. It ends, for one sense of the word, like one of the serialized chapters. Furthermore, the end came even more abruptly than I had expected. I got to it and learned that the remaining pages were an extra, not a continuation of the story except in the most tangential sense.

I had skipped the serial method of delivery because I wanted to be able to read through to a conclusion and because I did not want to have one story split into 14 titles on my kindle. So I guess I am still ahead if this is volume 1 of 3, or whatever it turns out to be.

I wish it would have been clear before I bought. This seems so near the border between an honest miscommunication and sleazy marketing that it is irritating.

A Storyline Past It's Prime
By John in PS
Let me preface this review by saying that I enjoyed the first three books in the Old Man's War. I did not write reviews for these book but would have given the first five stars, the second four, and the third, three. My impression about half way through The Last Colony, the third book in the series, was that the storyline was running a bit long in the tooth and I was encouraged by a note from the author at the end that it would be the last book in the series. I did not read Zoe's Tale because I was not interested in a retelling of Last Colony from a different point of view.

Having now finished The Human Division, it is clear (in my opinion) that this series is long past it's expiration date. I found myself struggling to remain interested a quarter of the way in, and really struggling halfway through to finish the book. One could say it drags, but that would be admitting that there was something there to drag. The great majority of The Human Division is written in dialogue between characters, which is fine, but hundreds of pages of "Wilson said" "Schmidt said" "Abumwe said" gets old fast. The book was originally released in a series of short stories, but collected in book form they felt very disjointed to me. The Green Mile this was not. I found the chapter about a talk show radio host cringe worthy - a cliched version of Glen Beck complete with a rally on the Mall in Washington DC. Last, Scalzi has a particular talent for writing smart ass characters which sound quite a bit like himself writing on his blog. One or two books with a number of characters who share this voice would be fine, an entire series of smart ass characters is not only tiring, it gives the impression that an author only has one or two voices in which he is able to speak.

I have read two other novels by Scalzi that were not in the Old Man's War universe, both of them disappointing, and unfortunately now have a sinking suspicion that he is one of those unfortunate authors who only has one or two good stories to tell.

Science fiction is the playground of the imagination. If you are interested in science or fascinated with the future then science fiction is where you explore new ideas and let your dreams and nightmares duke it out on the safety of the page or screen. But what if we could use science fiction to do more than that? What if we could use science fiction based on science fact to not only imagine our future but develop new technologies and products? What if we could use stories, movies and comics as a kind of tool to explore the real world implications and uses of future technologies today?

Science Fiction Prototyping is a practical guide to using fiction as a way to imagine our future in a whole new way. Filled with history, real world examples and conversations with experts like best selling science fiction author Cory Doctorow, senior editor at Dark Horse Comics Chris Warner and Hollywood science expert Sidney Perkowitz, Science Fiction Prototyping will give you the tools you need to begin designing the future with science fiction.

An interesting call for the connection between science fact and fiction to be amped up. The author wants sci-fi writers to more closely base their stories on emerging science and for scientists to respond to the real world implications that are explored in the stories. The constant stream of typos, misspellings and grammatical errors nearly drove me insane.

If you've thought our collective Hollywood consciousness is shaping our future rejoice in the confirmation here. Johnson gives us easy to understand answers and framework for creating your own SF prototype with a light touch and friendly attitude. While I may not agree with HAL losing his mind so much as succumbing to evil I have become an Assimov nut and look forward to examining and creating a new future with bright skies and peaceful AI interactions. Is AI even artificial???? Keep pushing

This book portrays an abusive man and a submissive woman
By wendys
I have generally liked Jacqueline Baird's books but this one is terrible. It shows an aggressive and verbally abusive male and a woman that just takes it all in because she is hypnotized by the the sex. He calls her terrible names, accuses her of terrible things, drugs her, takes her baby and she is supposed to take it all because she loves him and can't say no to sex to him. This is a very dysfunctional relationship - both need therapy. I was disappointed that Ms. Baird likes to portray women and men in such a terrible way and then justify it because they have a baby and good sex. It is a shame she wrote it this way.

the worst
By Sophie Asher
This book portrays, I think, the most dysfunctional relationship I've read in any Harlequin. Plus there are typos.

The Male Lead - no way could he ever be considered a hero - is verbally abusive. He calls her names, attacks her character, & demeans her right up to the very, very end, when apparently an alien takes over his body & he has a complete personality transformation. He's also physically abusive - shoves her, holds her down, forces his attentions on her. Until, of course, the Female Lead "weakens" and likes it, because she is TSTL, a doormat & easily manipulated. Until the very, very end, when she, too has a complete personality transformation. Unfortunate that neither was replaced by aliens sooner; it would've been a far better book.

Plus there are typos. Off the top of my head: her noisy child is making a "bracket". An engaged woman is a "fianoe" - which is wrong twice. Many more, but that's all I can remember without searching through the book, which I will never open again.

A Very Good Read
By bratcat22
I liked the unconventional heroine of this book. She's just an ordinary girl who falls in love with a gorgeous Spaniard businessman. Did I forget to mention he's rich too? penny travels around the world with her lover & even has a place in his home in Spain. The only problem is she feels taken for granted. Especially when her lover's ex fiancée & neighbor tattles that Penny was "rude" to her. Penny was really defending the housekeeper who got an unwarranted tongue lashing from the rude woman. Needless to say penny is NOT happy when her lover demands she apologize to the neighbor (she doesn't) and he sends her back to his apartment in London. When he FINALLY shows up there, penny makes a last ditch effort to save their relationship & proposes marriage to him. When he all but laughs in her face, she decides to leave him for good. Unknown to her, she isn't leaving alone. Almost 2 yrs later, her lover discovers quite by accident that he has a son. The child had been kidnapped by a woman posing as a nurse in a doctor's office & it was all over the news & TV. Needless to say penny is NOT happy to see him turn up on her doorstep after the baby is found. I won't spoil the ending, but I bet you can figure it out. I LOVE heroines like penny who don't take crap off ANYBODY. especially their lovers.

The only thing "Forbidden" should be this book!
By A Customer
Thank God it's out of print! Ashida Kim is basically a trap for making money. No real Martial Arts or Mind/Meditation aspects are in any of his books. Please don't waste your money on his books. The only thing you'll get out of any of this garbage is less space in your bookcase and a lighter wallet. Take the time to search out real practitioners of this or any art.

Horrible
By A Customer
This book is a joke; it is completely nonsensical and an insult to one's intelligence, not to mention Asian culture. Not only is this person completely unethical for writing such a book, he is also shameless to the point of pitifulness. If this book was written as a joke, fine. If not, shame on you "Mr. Kim".

Don't read this Review, like the book, it's FORBIDDEN!
By C. J. Hardman
Just Kidding! This book discusses the FORBIDDEN FIGHTING TECHNIQUES of the NINJA. And when you see these models performing their...techniques on paper, you too will be ~privileged~ to know why certain fighting techniques have been relegated to the realm of the FORBIDDEN. Namely in this case, because the techniques simply cannot work and will either cause you to injure yourself, or some hapless bystander.

One would be better advised to don cardboard armor and Nerf(TM) weapons than to heed the sallow call of this slender volume. Yes, I know playing ninja Ashida Kim style can be fun. You get to dress up in a black karate outfit and put on a black knit ski-mask and go traipsing about in broad daylight being...inconspicuous and all. Gets a wee bit hot in the summer though under all of that heat-absorbing black polyester fabric and the wool ski mask and such...however let me assure you that it's all fun and games until you waltz into the local 7-Eleven or Kwikee-Mart thinking "Gatorade", and the cashier takes one look at you in all your ninja stealth-finery and thinks "robbery" and pulls out ol' bessie. Not even the great Sho Kosugi has the ninja prowess to fend off the Ancient Powers of the Mystical shotgun.

That aside, Ashida Kim books are great gag gifts for real martial artists! :)

Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley: African Princess, Florida Slave, Plantation Slaveowner, by Daniel L Schafer

Anna Kingsley's life story adds a dramatic chapter to histories of the South, the state of Florida, and the African diaspora. Working from surprisingly extensive records, including information and photographs from extended-family members and descendants, Daniel Shafer reconstructs and documents one slave’s remarkable story.

Both an American slave and a slaveowner--and possibly an African princess--Anna was a teenager when she was captured in her homeland of Senegal in 1806 and sold into slavery. Zephaniah Kingsley, Jr., a planter and slave trader from Spanish East Florida, bought her in Havana, Cuba, and took her to his St. Johns River plantation in northeast Florida, where she soon became his household manager, his wife, and eventually the mother of four of his children. Her husband formally emancipated her in 1811, and she became the owner of her own farm and twelve slaves the following year.

For 25 years, life on her farm and at the Kingsley plantation on Fort George Island was relatively tranquil. But when Florida passed from Spanish to American control, and racism and discrimination increased in the American territories, Anna Kingsley and her children migrated to a colony in Haiti established by her husband as a refuge for free blacks. Amid the spiraling racial tensions of the antebellum period, Anna returned to north Florida, where she bought and sold land, sued white people in the courts, and became a central figure in a free black community. Such accomplishments by a woman in a patriarchal society are fascinating in themselves. To have achieved them as a woman of color is remarkable.

From Booklist
Schafer expands on previously written material about the fascinating legend of an African princess, brought to Florida as a slave, who later became a plantation and slave owner. Basing his work on extensive documentation, including interviews with African griots, Schafer traces the history of Anna Madgigine Jai from her homeland of Senegal, where she was captured at about 13 years of age in 1806 and sold to Zephaniah Kingsley, a maritime merchant, slave trader, and later an abolitionist. Kingsley eventually married Anna, made her manager of his plantation, and fathered four children with her. Anna was an independent, enterprising woman, who managed the plantation for 25 years until expanding U.S. territory threatened race relations, the family's cohesion, and inheritance rights. The family fled to Haiti, but after her husband's death Anna returned to the U.S. to answer legal challenges to his will, which left sizable portions of his estate to her and their children. This is a fascinating look at an extraordinary woman and the complexities of slavery beyond the common image of slavery in the South. Vanessa Bush

Anna Kingsley
By Josh Jacobson
Dr. Schafer brings the time period of Anna's life, and the Northeast Florida region to life through the story of Anna Kingsley in his book. Most of this book reads like a novel and his narrative style will keep the pages turning. With the riveting story, you are also given a very well researched story about the events that play out not only for Anna, but for the region and the African descendants who lived there. Though there are some blank spots left in Anna's history due to lack of documents, and the occasional stretching of what few primary documents are available, Dr. Schafer brings what feels like a full picture to the reader.

The only real issues that kept this book from getting five stars in my opinion, were the fact that some primary sources did have to be stretched in order to back up points being made. There are a few instances where it feels that some of these primary sources could be construed in other ways than just how they are presented here. This however can sometimes be necessary and the occurrences are very rare. The other issue was the pacing of the book can leave many readers struggling to finish the book. There comes a point near the end of the book where Dr. Schafer abandons his narrative style to lay out the genealogies of many of the area's residents. This chapter is sandwiched between two narrative chapters and probably could have been presented in an appendix.

Overall this book was very fascinating and Dr. Schafer's research leaves the reader with a very strong sense of being able to trust in his interpretation of the past.

A history that informs and entertains
By Kay Day
Every now and then, a history comes along that not only offers a fascinating look at a past era, but also manages to hold the reader's interest and entertain. Books like David McCullough's 1776 urge a reader along much like a good novel will do. Daniel L. Schafer's Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley has the same effect.

Schafer establishes the time period based on narratives and first hand research. Documents such as an emancipation notice for a plantation owner's slave Flora Hannahan provide an unvarnished look at the perception of African-Americans in the decades before the civil war: "On the emancipation notice, she is described as 'a mulatto-colored woman of twenty years of age, a native of Florida...about five feet high.'" (pg. 59)

These descriptives are enhanced by photographs of slave quarters as well as descendants of Anna Kingsley.

This book is a solid addition to the personal library, and it would be an excellent classroom resource for teachers of history or language arts. Author Schafer writes with an objective, even-handed approach, and accurately depicts the slave trade in all its characteristics and nuances, including the African natives who colluded with Spanish and English traders and also the elite American plantation owners who enjoyed the benefits of low-cost captive labor.

Aside from its educational value, the book is a good read for anyone interested in Southern culture or Florida history. I don't know Dr. Schafer, but I certainly admire his scholarship and his ability to tell a fascinating story.

NOW AN HBO MINISERIES

Not in my backyard -- that's the refrain commonly invoked by property owners who oppose unwanted development. Such words assume a special ferocity when the development in question is public housing. Lisa Belkin penetrates the prejudices, myths, and heated emotions stirred by the most recent trend in public housing as she re-creates a landmark case in riveting detail, showing how a proposal to build scattered-site public housing in middle-class neighborhoods nearly destroyed an entire city and forever changed the lives of many of its citizens.
-- Public housing projects are being torn down throughout the United States. What will take their place? Show Me a Hero explores the answer.
-- An important and compelling work of narrative nonfiction in the tradition of J. Anthony Lukas's Common Ground.
-- A sweeping yet intimate group portrait that assesses the effects of public policy on individual human lives.

Amazon.com Review
"The pipe bomb was small as pipe bombs go, but the explosion could be heard from several blocks away--a sharp bang as rows of factory-fresh ceramic tiles shattered into a pile of razor-edged rubble. Neighbors who were drifting off to sleep sat upright, awake. Family members who were preparing for bed looked at each other first with questions, then with certainty they had the answer. 'I guess somebody is trying to blow up the new housing,' one man joked to his wife. But it wasn't a joke. That's exactly what someone was trying to do."

In 1988, when a federal judge ordered the city of Yonkers, New York, to integrate more thoroughly its low-income housing throughout the city, it set off a bitter dispute that would consume the town for the next five years. Among those caught in the controversy was the city's 28-year-old mayor, Nicholas Wasicsko, who had used the issue to his advantage during his campaign and found that he would never be able to escape it, either during or after his administration. Veteran New York Times journalist Lisa Belkin focuses not on the abstract "sides" of the integration debate, but on the people who take those sides. It's that personal perspective that makes her account most worth reading.

From Publishers Weekly
In the late 1980s, the city of Yonkers, N.Y., made national headlines because of a bitter battle waged by many of its residents and political leaders against a federal court-ordered public housing plan. The plan compelled Yonkers to build public housing in the predominantly white east-side districts of the city. The heated opposition to the plan convulsed the city, which complied with the court order only when court-imposed fines threatened to consume the entire city budget. Belkin, who covered the story for the New York Times, follows the housing battle through the eyes of its participants: fearful white residents of the east side; black public housing tenants anxious to escape the misery of the west-side projects; Oscar Newman, the housing consultant and architect who designed the new town houses; and Nick Wasicsko, the young mayor of Yonkers who courageously confronted his own core constituency and tried to get the city to accept the plan (and who, five years later, out of office and out of prospects, shot himself). In her effort to interweave so many personal perspectives, Belkin sometimes loses her focus on the key public policies at stake. She does, however, enable readers to feel the hopes and fears of both the homeowners, who felt that their neighborhoods and property values were threatened by the housing plan, and the disadvantaged public housing tenants, who were seeking redress for years of discrimination and simply wanted a safe place to call home. Belkin's gritty book is a vivid slice of urban politics, racial tension and the difficulties inherent in realizing the American dream.

From Library Journal
In the 1980 case U.S. v. Yonkers, the Justice Department charged that race determined the location and quality of education in Yonkers, a situation created by the segregation of housing. In 1985 the court ruled that new public housing must be built on the white middle-class east side of the city. By 1988, when New York Times writer Belkin's narrative begins, the stand-off between the federal judge and the city has escalated into war; the judge's orders were not obeyed until his fines brought the city to the brink of bankruptcy. Belkin (First Do No Harm, LJ 1/93) lets a diverse group of individuals tell the story of the battles and then the building, including the mayor, a citizen who protested the decision, and several residents of public housing. This is an interesting look at how a court decision and politics can affect people on an individual level. Although there are no footnotes, it's apparent that Belkin has done a thorough job. Highly recommended for all libraries.

Sensational. A true slice of what it was it was really like
By A Customer
I've never written one of these before, but I just read that reader from New England and I had to respond. I think we read two different books. The one I read captured the chaos and heartbreak of the city I have lived in all my life. I was at a lot of the meetings and clashes that fill this book, and reading Belkin I felt like I was there all over again. More important, I learned so much about the behind the scenes wrangling that I didn't know. One dimensional? No way. She peered into people's souls. Did she streamline? Yes. And as a reader, I thank her. The point was the essence of a city in chaos, and she painted that portrait in gritty and riveting detail. It wasn't her job to make sure everyone in town got their name in her book. As for Hollywood, I don't think they'll have the guts to make this movie. There are no pat happy endings here and no easy answers. Just a story that I couldn't put down.

Yonkers-a city divided
By Janine W.
"Show Me A Hero" is a compelling story of public housing reform that went on in Yonkers, New York from 1988-1998. The author told the story in a very captivating way, giving the insight of several people, not only the political perspective, but also from the perspective of the people that lived in the public housing. The city of Yonkers was handed down a court order that it had to build public housing on the white, middle-class part of town. This became a huge political battle and nearly ripped the town apart, while eventually ruining the career of the then mayor, Nick Wasicsko. As much as the white, middle-class residents didn't want the new public housing complexes in their neighborhoods, the people living in the public housing really would have preferred to be surrounded by their own. They felt uncomfortable and like they were not part of the community. This story closely follows the lives of several families who moved from the run down public housing to the new housing, townhouses, that they hoped would offer them a better life. Many times these people felt more threatened and afraid in their new homes in the middle-class neighborhood, than they did in their old apartments that were surrounded by violence and drugs. It was very interesting to get some understanding of the vicious cycle that poverty can create--children having children, absent fathers, the sick and elderly, all contributing to these lifestyles. Lisa Belkin wrote this story using a combination of documented facts, common knowledge on how people felt, and did so from a journalistic approach. This is the result of six years of work she did observing, researching and following these families. I think Yonkers did a lot of things right, and also has a lot to teach the rest of the country about how to do it better.
I found this book to be very entertaining and would recommend it.

nonfiction that reads like a narrative
By A Customer
This is a well written book that encourages thinking about important social issues. The City of Yonkers was forced by the courts to desegregate housing after years of discriminating against minorities. The decision was made to have small groups of cluster homes scattered throughout white neighborhoods. All hell broke loose in the white communities after the court decision. Whites feared a minority presence and a decline in property values and fought viciously against the homes. Poor families hoped for a safer, better place to live and raise their families. A balanced and complex story, well wrought, with an interesting cast of characters from politicians to single mothers desperate to move their families to safer neighborhoods. All the answers about the future of public housing aren't here, but certainly a clearer concept of the issues involved, from personal to political, can be gathered from this fascinating story.
