The World Tree : Gathering for the Shift of 2012-2013, by William Gaspar

Synopsis:
The ancient Mayans invented a remarkably accurate calendar that forewarns of the Earth’s end. Is there any relevance to this ancient calendar and is the end of days approaching?

Doctors William A. Gaspar and Jose A. Jaramillo have written a compelling and fascinating narrative about this ancient mystery and what it means to human survival. Past research has indicated that 2012 is the year in which the rhythms and patterns of the Earth’s climate and its galactic alignment with the Solstice Sun may culminate in drastic weather, resulting in devastation of such proportions that the Earth, as we know it, will no longer be.

Scientifically examining Ice Age rhythms, calendar cycles, Sacred Geometry, Astronomy and Cosmology, Gaspar and Jaramillo arrive at an educated conclusion about what we can expect during this significant year in time. With the obvious changes occurring with our Earth’s climate, The Word Tree explores the correlation between Ice age cycles, climate change and the Mayan calendar, answering the question: is it a true predictor of what’s to come and will 2012 bring a significant shift in the Earth’s infinite existence?

About the Author:
Dr. William A. Gaspar, an Internist, and Dr. Jose A. Jaramillo are published authors. Dr. Gaspar has been a guest on the Art Bell Show, Laura Lee, X-Zone and Global Talk Radio discussing his previous book, The Celestial Clock. Dr. Jose A. Jaramillo has written the book The Mayan Calendar: The Holistic Book of Knowledge and directed the films Between 2 Worlds and The Alignment Within. They live with their families in New Mexico and California.

An Impressive Piece of Work!
By Rubinax
A must have! Well-written and very well researched, it is apparent the authors went to great lengths to collect data from various fields of knowledge including the Mayan Calendar, ice age climate cycles, Sacred Geometry, astronomy, as well as mythological and religious texts. And for those of us that learn better with visual aides, there are plenty of pictures and illustrations to elaborate on important points. So, whether you are already educated in the theories behind the 2012 shift, are just beginning your research, or would simply like to survive the next couple of years on this planet, this book will serve as an invaluable source of information!

Double Down: Game Change 2012, by Mark Halperin, John Heilemann

Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times:
"Those hungry for political news will read Double Down for the scooplets and insidery glimpses it serves up about the two campaigns, and the clues it offers about the positioning already going on among Republicans and Democrats for 2016 ... The book testifies to its authors’ energetic legwork and insider access... creating a novelistic narrative that provides a you-are-there immediacy... They succeed in taking readers interested in the backstabbing and backstage maneuvering of the 2012 campaign behind the curtains, providing a tactile... sense of what it looked like from the inside."

In their runaway bestseller Game Change, Mark Halperin and John Heilemann captured the full drama of Barack Obama’s improbable, dazzling victory over the Clintons, John McCain, and Sarah Palin. With the same masterly reporting, unparalleled access, and narrative skill, Double Down picks up the story in the Oval Office, where the president is beset by crises both inherited and unforeseen—facing defiance from his political foes, disenchantment from the voters, disdain from the nation’s powerful money machers, and dysfunction within the West Wing. As 2012 looms, leaders of the Republican Party, salivating over Obama’s political fragility, see a chance to wrest back control of the White House—and the country. So how did the Republicans screw it up? How did Obama survive the onslaught of super PACs and defy the predictions of a one-term presidency? Double Down follows the gaudy carnival of GOP contenders—ambitious and flawed, famous and infamous, charismatic and cartoonish—as Mitt Romney, the straitlaced, can-do, gaffe-prone multimillionaire from Massachusetts, scraped and scratched his way to the nomination.

Double Down exposes blunders, scuffles, and machinations far beyond the klieg lights of the campaign trail: Obama storming out of a White House meeting with his high command after accusing them of betrayal. Romney’s mind-set as he made his controversial “47 percent” comments. The real reasons New Jersey governor Chris Christie was never going to be Mitt’s running mate. The intervention held by the president’s staff to rescue their boss from political self-destruction. The way the tense détente between Obama and Bill Clinton morphed into political gold. And the answer to one of the campaign’s great mysteries—how did Clint Eastwood end up performing Dada dinner theater at the Republican convention?

In Double Down, Mark Halperin and John Heilemann take the reader into back rooms and closed-door meetings, laying bare the secret history of the 2012 campaign for a panoramic account of an election that was as hard fought as it was lastingly consequential.

Oh, political junkies, it’s time to feast on the red-and-blue deliciousness that was the 2012 election. As they did in their book about the previous presidential joust, Game Change (2010), the well-connected authors have worked their sources thoroughly to give readers a warts-and-all look at what went on behind the scenes. Fellow Mormons Jon Hunstman and Mitt Romney did not care for each other (Mrs. Huntsman felt Romney was part of the “Morman Mafia”); Chris Christie endorsed Romney but, behind his back, mocked the candidate’s Fred McMurray persona; and, on the Democratic side, nobody, except the Obamas, liked Valerie Jarrett, who was nicknamed The Night Stalker for her after-hour visits to the First Family. But this is more than tittle-tattle. Halperin and Heilemann give readers a real sense of why things shaped up the way the did, why events fell one way or the other, and who got clobbered as a result. While the book focuses on the election, it also delves into decisions being made at the White House that affected outcomes. This one is more clearly sourced than the previous book, and one incident in particular gives a hint as to how connected the authors were: In an early scene, the president is meeting dozens of advisors about the upcoming election, despite the fact he had been warned that talking with such a large group would lead to leaks. Obama, however, told everyone in the room he trusted them and proceeded to list his regrets about his first term. Six weeks later, he was informed that his list had leaked to two reporters writing a book on the 2012 election—Halperin and Heilemann. --Ilene Cooper

Review
Praise for Mark Halperin and John Heilemann's Double Down

Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times:
"Those hungry for political news will read Double Down for the scooplets and insidery glimpses it serves up about the two campaigns, and the clues it offers about the positioning already going on among Republicans and Democrats for 2016 ... The book testifies to its authors’ energetic legwork and insider access ... creating a novelistic narrative that provides a you-are-there immediacy ... They succeed in taking readers interested in the backstabbing and backstage maneuvering of the 2012 campaign behind the curtains, providing a tactile ... sense of what it looked like from the inside."

Michael Kinsley, The New York Times Book Review:
“Chock-full of anecdotes, secret meetings, indiscreet remarks ... No one can compete [with Halperin and Heilemann]. That’s what it means to own the franchise. It’s a small club: these two guys and Bob Woodward. And with this book, they’ve earned their admission.”

The Economist:
“Sharp insights buttressed by startling indiscretions fill Double Down, a new account of Barack Obama’s win over his 2012 Republican rival, Mitt Romney. This gripping book—a sequel to Game Change, a bestseller about Mr. Obama’s 2008 path to the White House—cements the status of the authors as unrivalled chroniclers of campaign politics.”

People Magazine:
"Compulsively readable follow-up to Game Change...A chronicle of the freak show that was the 2012 presidential election, the book illustrates how profoundly personality shapes history....Double Down amply demonstrates how our 44th President earned every one of those brand-new gray hairs."

USA Today:
“Many juicy disclosures ... [a] near-flawless narrative.”

Jeff Labrecque, Entertainment Weekly:
“Journalists Halperin and Heilemann don’t lack for access, delivering another down-and-dirty account of an election that plays out like high-stakes high school cafeteria politics…. Double Down looks less like a sequel to 2008 than a tantalizing prequel to 2016. I’m all-in.”

Peter Hamby, The Washington Post:
“Page-turning…. translat[es] insider politics for mass-market readers with behind-the-scenes reporting and Gonzo flair."

Kirkus Reviews:
“A highly entertaining, dishy read, full of astonishing revelations about the strengths and, most intriguingly, the foibles of the nation’s political stars and egos… Like crack for political junkies.”

Booklist:
"Oh, political junkies, it’s time to feast on the red-and-blue deliciousness that was the 2012 election. As they did in their book about the previous presidential joust, Game Change (2010), the well-connected authors have worked their sources thoroughly to give readers a warts-and-all look at what went on behind the scenes. … Halperin and Heilemann give readers a real sense of why things shaped up the way they did, why events fell one way or the other, and who got clobbered as a result."

Bloomberg/Businessweek:
“Double Down succeeds by sticking to its story and having the main characters—Obama, Romney, Joe Biden and their key aides—reveal themselves through their actions. The result is a much more coherent experience of the campaign than readers could get by living through the contemporaneous news coverage. By letting the story do the work, the authors show us a lot.”

Associated Press:
“Sharp writing and intriguing behind-the-scenes nuggets that are sure to get tongues wagging."

Boston Globe:
“Their in-depth look at the chaotic GOP primary also sheds light on the emerging schism between establishment Republicans and the Tea Party movement, which bubbled to the surface during the recent government shutdown. These insider insights help to breathe new life into old news, and make Double Down a must read for political junkies.”

Sean Hannity:
“[Halperin and Heilemann] are without question two of politics ultimate insiders…Their first book about the 2008 election, Game Change, took the world of Washington by storm.  Well they’ve done it again. Their brand new book Double Down is stirring up just as much controversy.”

Ezra Klein, The Washington Post:
“Double Down... is a joyous romp through the seedy underbelly of presidential campaigning....It’s also a marvel of reporting. Any time three staff members met in a room to badmouth a colleague or a candidate admitted to a moment of stress or self-doubt, ... John Heilemann and Mark Halperin appear to have been sitting in the corner, scribbling notes."

Joe Scarborough, MSNBC/Morning Joe:
“Done it before, and have done it again.”

Charlie Rose:
“In many ways, an insight into America.”

Chris Matthews, MSNBC/Hardball:
“Great new book…. Great reportage.”

Barbara Walters, ABC-TV/The View:
“Authors of the bestselling book turned Emmy-winning HBO movie Game Change are telling all in their latest book ... It is terrific.”

Mark Levin:
“This is a great read.”

Lawrence O’Donnell, MSNBC’s The Last Word:
"I love this book.”

Anderson Cooper, AC360:
“Really fascinating details.”

Andrew Ross Sorkin, CNBC's Squawk Box:
“Buzz book of the moment.”

Dylan Byers, Politico:
“In an era when the most minute details of a presidential campaign are chronicled in endless tweets and seemingly instant eBooks they have published an old-fashioned print product filled with new revelations.”

Howard Kurtz, Fox News:
“You’d think there were no revelations left from the 2012 campaign, but Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, the Game Change duo, strike again in their new book.”

Business Insider:
“Fascinating new insights.”

Geraldo Rivera:
"Sizzling... They've done it again."

Willie Geist, MSNBC/Morning Joe:
“Huge.”

Philadelphia Inquirer:
“Halperin and Heilemann present another handsomely crafted nonfiction political thriller, never devoid of shocking disclosures….the scenes they construct are generally insightful and entertaining. These two accomplished journalists are adept at capturing the clash of personalities in contemporary American politics, and they have an uncanny ability to get scoops other reporters don't.”

Triple Down --- A Three-volume encyclopedia of the 2012 election
By Frank A. Lewes
This is a comprehensive and surprisingly unbiased account of the 2012 campaign and the backstories behind the candidates who took part in it. The book is in three parts, each of which is comprehensive enough to be a stand-alone book in its own right.

The first "book" (Part I) is the backstory of Obama's Presidency from 2008 to 2012. This was my least favorite part because it was clinically written without much emotion or new insights. Authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann describes Obama as a moderate, pragmatic sort of person who has as little use for the self-serving Black Civil Rights establishment as he does for the Conservative Tea Party activists. According to Halperin (a Conservative) and Heilemann, Obama may come across at times as a petulant professor, but he's hardly the extreme Liberal-verging-on-Marxist maniac that has taken root in popular Conservative folklore.

Halperin and Heilemann give a fair account of Obama's political battles with the Republican House of Representatives over healthcare reform, banking bailouts, and federal budgets. But a politically savvy reader will already be familiar with this material. I'd suggest skimming this part or skipping it altogether and getting started with the second part, which makes the book a worthwhile read.

The second part --- describing the Republican primary candidates' machinations to win the nomination --- has all the drama and excitement you'd expect in a political book

It starts out with a fair-minded account of Mitt Romney's career. Nothing new here, because Mitt has been around long enough for most of us to know his story. He's one of those incorruptible personalities whose scandal-free life seems dull by its very absence of misconduct. The only surprise is that the real money brokers in the Republican party seem to have viewed Mitt as a penny-ante operator:

======
Trump was publicly sniffy about Romney as a capitalist, denigrating him as a "small-business guy," and privately disdainful of Bain. "They'd buy a company and fire everyone," he told his associates.
=======

Where my interest was really piqued was in Halperin and Heilemann bringing to life the second-tier challengers like Jeb Bush, Mike Huckabee, Donald Trump, Mitch Daniels, Jon Huntsman, Rick Perry, Tim Pawlenty, Michelle Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum.

Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee had spent years as low-paid governors of their states. They had belatedly achieved comfortable wealth in the private sector after retiring from public service. Going into 2012 they had to face the agonizing decision of whether to risk every penny of their personal wealth on the time-consuming and expensive campaign to be President. Little wonder that they declined to enter the contest.

I especially enjoyed the curious stories of tension between fellow Minnesotans Tim Pawlenty and Michelle Bachmann who appear to have detested each other as bitter home state rivals. The same close rivalry poisoned relations between fellow Utah Mormons Mitt Romney and John Huntsman. Rick Perry, Herman Cain, and Newt Gingrich also have their interesting personal and professional stories told, usually in good-natured ways.

And I LOVED the antics of Republican campaign consultants Karl Rove and the delightfully mischievous Ed Rollins. The candidates may have been courteous to each other in the television debates, but their professional campaign staffs dished the dirt behind the scenes. If the authors' sources are correct, minor candidate Jon Huntsman's impish staff sabotaged Mitt Romney's campaign by leaking information about his overseas tax havens and brought down Herman Cain by going public with the womanizing stories.

I came away disappointed with Donald Trump, whose three billion dollars would have enabled him to campaign. But Trump let his devotion to personal fame and fortune trump his desire to serve the American people by campaigning to be their President. He felt that running for public office would cost him money by taking him away from his business.

But the most meaningful insight is about New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The book should be read for that reason alone. Halperin and Heilemann don't cheerlead for any candidate, but the stories of Governor Christie as told through the eyes of others is a powerful endorsement of him as a candidate for 2016.

The Third Part of the book, about the presidential race between Obama and Romney, is, like the first part, only so-so. That's probably because most of the stories are still fresh on our minds --- the Bain Capital controversies; Obama's dreadful first debate; Romney's "47% moochers and takers" gaffe; and Romney's search for a running mate that culminated the selection of Paul Ryan.

The strength of this book --- its completeness --- is also its weakness. Some may feel that it is TOO complete. For example, I was not at all interested in the pages devoted to minor non-candidate Haley Barbour who never got into the Republican primaries. There is also a "facts, just the facts" tone to the book. There is no opinionating by the author about WHY the nomination process and the election turned out the way it did. The dry facts are presented, and the readers are left to draw their own conclusions.

The book is more like an encyclopedia of pick-and-choose topics. I spent most of my time on Part II, which by itself justified the purchase. The entertaining dramas of the Republicans competing against each other made for some delightful stories, as well as getting to know these second-tier candidates (some of whom will be first-tier in 2016 or 2020) made this a worthwhile read. The best was the part devoted to understanding what makes Governor Chris Christie tick. I came away feeling even more comfortable with him as a Republican candidate for 2016 than I already was.

The book may be over-long and perhaps contains some material that is not of the highest interest. BUT it is THE encyclopedia of the 2012 political campaigns, the candidates who participated in them, and the backstories that went into making the candidates and their campaigns. It's the one "all you need to know" source for the life and times of every political personality of any relevance to the 2012 campaign.

Very readable, but comes up short
By William Springer
In early October 2012, things seemed to be going very well indeed for Mitt Romney. He faced an unpopular incumbent presiding over a still-lethargic economy. He had access to a staggering amount of money (both sides spent over a billion dollars, with Romney's spending surpassing that of the president), although he had limited control over the significant fraction of it that passed through the Romney-aligned Super PACs. Finally, he was in complete control of the first debate, coming out of Denver as the clear winner. Yet a few weeks later, he would lose the election by millions of votes, with the president claiming over 60% of the electoral college.

There have already been a number of books written about the 2012 election, and will no doubt be many more, but Double Down has been hotly anticipated as a sequel to 2010′s Game Change. As in Game Change, the authors appear to have been granted extensive access to hundreds of people involved in the campaigns; they credit over 500 interviews (all, naturally, on deep background). But does the book live up to the hype?

For the most part, the writing is very good and kept me turning pages. The authors do have an annoying tendency to never use a common word where an obscure word will do, which detracts from the readability; I consider myself to have a pretty good vocabulary, but I found myself pulling out my phone more than once to look up yet another obscure adjective. Otherwise, the book flows fairly well. The first section, by far the shortest, covers the Obama administration in the lead-up to the election season. I got the sense that the authors felt they had already covered Obama sufficiently in Game Change and now wanted to concentrate on the republicans.

Section two covers the republican primary season. As with the primary voters, the text jumps from one candidate to another as Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Gingrich, and Santorum become ascendant, but always returns to Mitt Romney as the current not-Mitt flames out. Romney is definitely the star of the book, and where Obama intrudes in this section, he and his policies are seem from Romney's point of view.

In section three, the stage is set, the candidates selected. From the Obama side, we see the reconciliation with Clinton and the struggles the candidate has in switching from his preferred professorial lecture mode to the style required of modern presidential debates. Still, the focus remains on the Romney campaign, the struggles they have with introducing their candidate to the country, and some of the innumerable missteps they took along the way.

What disappointed me about this book was that, except for things I would classify as gossip (such as who told Harry Reed that Romney went a decade without paying taxes, and several incidents demonstrating why Obama's feelings of betrayal when private stories were leaked to the press), there isn't a lot of new information in this book. I had hoped to read more about the Obama administration's get out the vote operation and their vaunted computer system (and the Romney campaign's disastrous ORCA system), but these went unmentioned; while they've been covered to some extent in other books, I haven't seen one that covers them in the level of detail I would like to see. What I did enjoy was the details of how each of the republican candidates, most of whom I would consider to have zero chance of becoming president, came to sincerely believe at one time or another that he or she would win the nomination and the election.

In the end, this is a book not about tactics or policy, but about people - about the choices that Obama and Romney (and, to a lesser extent, the other republican candidates) made about how to present themselves to the voters. Right up to election day, Romney believed that he would be the victor, and this book attempts (largely successfully) to demonstrate how he and the people around him viewed his candidacy. For the most part, this is the story of Mitt Romney.

I spent a while debating whether to give this book three stars or four; I was quite engrossed in it but was somewhat disappointed by the content. In the end I rated it 3.4 stars (rounded down to three) because although I enjoyed the book, I didn't feel more informed after reading it, and I felt somewhat that the authors were more interested in demonstrating their access and vocabulary than in offering new insights into the race. Still, for anyone interested in the people rather than the policy, or who did not follow the election closely until the final months, I recommend this book.

Marathon Men
By The Ginger Man
A half century ago, Theodore White wrote The Making of the President 1960 and, in so doing, changed the way in which we view political campaigns. Double Down follows the tradition of covering an election season as a contest in which tactics are far more interesting and prominent than are policies or moral choices. To the authors, "the 2012 election had the feel of a big casino, as the players took on the complexion of compulsive gamblers, pushing more and more chips into the center of the table." As with the previous book by these authors (Game Change), the very title refers to the campaign as a race rather than as the process of choosing a leader.

In Game Change, the authors delivered an entirely new characterization of Sarah Palin based on interviews with Republican strategist Steven Schmidt. Double Down does not bring as much new information to the table but it does present an almost seamless, inside look at the 2012 election from primaries through victory speech. The book is especially strong in its ability to show how the individual strengths and character flaws of each candidate inevitably stamp themselves upon the campaign. The authors also give due consideration to the changing role of money in the election as a result of Citizens United and the ever increasing impact of experts in each party on campaign planning and execution.

The book is more cursory in its analysis of policy differences between the candidates. The 2012 election became, in many ways, a referendum on Obama's performance and passage of the Affordable Health Care Act. This represented a complicated hurdle for Mitt Romney since the Act was based on a Heritage Foundation idea which Romney had championed in Massachusetts. Even far right Senator Jim DeMint had once endorsed Romney by proclaiming, "He has demonstrated, when he stepped into government in a very difficult state, that he could work in a difficult partisan environment, take some good conservative ideas, like private health insurance, and apply them to the need to have everyone insured." To his credit, Romney refused to fully disavow his accomplishment since he believed it to be "a Republican way of reforming the market." He finally manages to extricate himself from this labyrinth by arguing that such a policy solution only works at the state level but not before expunging from the paperback version of his book No Apologies the hope that "we can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country."

The authors describe the impact of the policy debate on the campaign but do not perform the important function of reporting how policy discussion is twisted and adumbrated by the need to win votes. As a result, Double Down does a great job of covering politics as contest but it also reflects a weakness in American journalism by avoiding consideration of policy and principle. This kind of complicated analysis rarely occurs in print and video outlets during the long campaign marathon. When the dust has cleared at the finish line, however, readers should finally expect that we take as close a look at substance as at style.

Story of Ireland, by Neil Hegarty

The history of Ireland has traditionally focused on the localized struggles of religious conflict, territoriality and the fight for Home Rule. But from the early Catholic missions into Europe to the embrace of the euro, the real story of Ireland has played out on the larger international stage. "Story of Ireland" presents this new take on Irish history, challenging the narrative that has been told for generations and drawing fresh conclusions about the way the Irish have lived. Revisiting the major turning points in Irish history, Neil Hegarty re-examines the accepted stories, challenging long-held myths and looking not only at the dynamics of what happened in Ireland, but also at the role of events abroad. How did Europe's 16th century religious wars inform the incredible violence inflicted on the Irish by the Elizabethans? What was the impact of the French and American revolutions on the Irish nationalist movement? What were the consequences of Ireland's policy of neutrality during the Second World War? "Story of Ireland" sets out to answer these questions and more, rejecting the introspection that has often characterized Irish history. Accompanying a landmark series coproduced by the BBC and RTE, and with an introduction by series presenter, Fergal Keane, "Story of Ireland" is an epic account of Ireland's history for an entire new generation.

Author Meets a Challenge
By Loves the View
Neil Hegarty digests 2000 years of history into a readable 342 pages. While readers may want a page turning text, this pageant is too long to dwell on individual heroes or eras, which are the sorts of things that make for a more compelling read.

Hegarty showed me a lot that I hadn't known, not just about the history - which I knew I didn't know - but also about the source of the conflict - which I thought I knew something about.

The history is tragic from the start. Henry II and the Pope essentially give Ireland to each other. From then on there is a history or wars/uprisings and punitive/confiscatory laws. Over the years, Irish leaders have looked for ways out of the quagmire, but there was no "luck `o the Irish" for its political life. Ireland sought outside help from the Catholic Church and Catholic nations, but most of medieval and renaissance Europe did not want to take on England over the Irish question; France, which was finally convinced to help, was impeded and discouraged by a snowstorm. In modern times, World Wars I and II took precedence and so it went, until the recent uneasy detente.

Hegarty shows the conflict has not been one dimensional. It has been viewed as a colonial problem, a religious war, a civil war and a class war.

I was surprised at how many Protestants had been champions of severing/reducing Ireland's ties with England; surprised at Ireland's posture in WW2 and its aftermath (De Valera's commiseration on the death of Hitler); and surprised at the conservatism that followed autonomy (censorship, laws against women, etc.)

Two memorable portraits (among a very large cast) are those of Theobald Tone and Charles Parnell.

The layout and print make the reading easy on the eyes.

The one weakness is the maps which don't incorporate all the place names referred to in the text of their respective eras. The List of Maps, to be more helpful, should have page numbers.

At the end, there is a chronology. As I reviewed it, I was glad I wouldn't be tested. The list of names and events is far too long for my memory.

If you are looking for an overview of how things have gotten to the current state in Ireland, this is clearly the book for you. (If you are not interested in the subject, it will not pull you in.) Neil Hegarty has done a great job of digesting this long and complex saga.

The Story of Ireland is Magnificent!
By W. R. Muhr
The Story of Ireland by Neil Hegarty is absolutely masterful in the presentation of the history of this beautiful and troubled country for those of us who do not live in Ireland as well as those who do. Hegarty is straight-forward with his commentary yet writes of his beloved country for those of us (like myself) who have visited, but don't have a feel for the dynamics of the Irish people. Hegarty does this for me. His easy to read style and lively dialogue is superb and you are drawn into the story of a country rich in tradition involving both heroes and villians. There is more to Ireland than "The Troubles" and the "Famine" and this book tells the story well. Highly recommended

Amazon.com Review
Two disgraced former Secret Service officers team up to solve a series of copy-cat crimes in this exciting new thriller by a master of the game. Sean King was momentarily distracted when a presidential candidate he'd been guarding was assassinated a few feet from where he stood, and Michelle Maxwell left the Service under a similar cloud when she lost a "protectee" to an ingenious kidnapping scheme, events told in Baldacci's typical terse, fast-paced style in Split Second. Now partners in a private investigation firm in a small Virginia town, they're hired to investigate a burglary at the home of a wealthy local family. But even before the chief suspect in the break-in meets his death in a gruesome slaying reminiscent of a serial killer long since caught and punished, King and Maxwell get caught up in a string of other murders, each of which copies the techniques of another madman, from San Francisco's Zodiac Killer to Chicago's infamous John Wayne Gacy. While the two protagonists aren't especially complex or well-developed, the action never stops, and Baldacci's trademark pacing keeps the reader turning pages until the denouement, which unfortunately isn't quite as satisfying as the rest of the novel. --Jane Adams

Why Hour Game: An Exclusive Essay by David Baldacci

It's hard not to notice that the majority of fictional serial killers are cut from the same mold. When David Baldacci wrote Hour Game, he went out of his way to create a murderous original. Read this Amazon.com exclusive essay to learn how and why he did it.

From Publishers Weekly
Baldacci's last book, Split Second, was a relatively weak offering from this bestselling author, sunk by a cartoonish villain and absurd plot. But it did introduce two of Baldacci's (Absolute Power, etc.) most memorable characters, former Secret Service agents Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, in business together as private investigators in smalltown Wrightsburg, Va. Baldacci is back in form, and King and Maxwell reappear in this utterly absorbing, complex mystery-thriller that spins in unexpected directions. The novel starts as a serial-killer thriller, for there's a murderer at work in Wrightsburg whose selection of victims appears random but whose modus operandi, differing from kill to kill, mimics the work of a notorious serial killer—the Zodiac killer, John Wayne Gacy, etc. The fifth victim is local resident and international tycoon Robert E. Lee Battle. King and Maxwell have already been tangling with the gothic horror show of a dysfunctional Southern family that is the Battles, as they've been hired to help prove the innocence of a Battle handyman accused of stealing from the family. Then that handyman is murdered, and the duo (along with a clueless local sheriff and an obnoxious FBI agent) must race to figure out if the same killer is behind all the murders and, if so, why. There are terrific action sequences sprinkled throughout, and plenty of suspense, and the King/Maxwell relationship, while not romantic, emits sparks. It's Baldacci's portrayal of smalltown Southern life, however, and his sharp characterizations of the Battles, from the bombastic Bobby and his regal widow to his weird extended family, that give the novel texture and depth: this is Baldacci's most accomplished tale since his nonthriller Wish You Well, and it rivals that novel in its social commentary. Despite fair clues, few if any readers will ID the villain (villains?) before they're revealed, and a snappy surprise ending will have Baldacci's many fans remembering why they love this author so much.

From Booklist
Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, the former Secret Service agents from Baldacci's previous outing, Split Second (2003), are on the trail of a serial killer in this new novel. King and Maxwell have just gone into business together as private investigators when Michelle discovers the body of a young woman in the woods. The body was posed with a wristwatch stopped at 1:00. Two high-school students are the next victims; both have watches on their wrists--the boy's reads 2:00, the girl's 3:01. King and Maxwell aid the police while working on their own case: a burglary in the house of Remmy Battle, a wealthy, tough southerner whose husband, Bobby, lies in a coma at the local hospital. The prime suspect is Junior Deaver, whose fingerprints are found at the crime scene. But Junior swears he's innocent. The victim list keeps growing: a successful high-powered lawyer and then Bobby Battle himself. Soon King begins to suspect that the serial killer might not be choosing his victims at random, and he believes one of the murders is the work of a different killer. The plot doesn't hold together perfectly, even starting out a bit slow, but it recovers to build to an exciting finish. Kristine Huntley

Good Characters - A Mediocre, Confusing Read
By Jana L.Perskie
I asked myself, a third of the way through "The Hour Game," what more could a reader want in a mystery, suspense thriller than what author David Baldacci has offered up in his latest novel? There are two fascinating protagonists with great mutual chemistry, interesting secondary characters, an intriguing plot and a bevy of subplots. Needless to say, I looked forward, with delight, to reading the rest of the book - only to be let down, cruelly. I just hate to be disappointed by a novel. I am an avid reader and pride myself on my ability to concentrate. However, Baldacci introduces so many characters of great import, and more of lesser standing, along with so many plots, subplots, potential plots and all sorts of motives, that I found it difficult to keep them all straight. And this book is far too long! I began to study the novel, actually taking notes, as if it were homework for a class in thermodynamics. Not fun! I just finished reading many positive reviews for "The Hour Game" and am beginning to wonder if I am the only one who was effected negatively. Although I am tempted to fudge a bit on the rating and go with the crowd, I have to call it as I see it. Reviewer's integrity and all that.

Mr. Baldacci introduced us to two disgraced secret service agents in "Split Second," Sean King and Michelle Maxwell. Since we last saw them, these two have changed careers and joined forces by becoming partners in a private investigation firm, King and Maxwell, located in small-town Wrightsburg, Virginia. This odd couple, of sorts, is what makes the novel work. Their combined energy, skills, intelligence and humor cannot be beat. King is a "neatnick," everything-in-its-place type. He is a connoisseur of rich food and fine wine, and a steady rock when it comes to dependability. Michelle is a slob! Seriously. Her place is a mess and she is impulsive to boot. A super athlete and health food addict, there's nothing she likes more, (almost), than to row her boat many miles and return to a large spinach salad, multigrain bread and carrot juice. The two respect each other's differences because there's real affection between them. No romance yet...but there are possibilities. To add romantic tension, a former love of King's, the attractive medical examiner, Sylvia Diaz, is introduced - like we really needed another character.

While out jogging Michelle discovers a dead body. The woman's corpse had been posed and a Zodiac watch, which didn't belong to her, was affixed to her wrist. The time was set to one o'clock. Was the killer trying to mimic the infamous Zodiac Killer? Murders #2 and 3 are of a young couple parked and necking at a favorite make-out site. The weapon - a shotgun. A dog collar was left on the floorboard of their car. Is this a Son of Sam copycat? Are the murders related and what is the message and motive? How are the corpses connected? The bizarre killings continue, each scene evoking aspects of former famous serial killers, and each death marked by a precise time. Police Chief Todd Williams deputizes King and Maxwell. The PIs make little sense of it all. There are too many potential suspects, (what are their names, again?), and a dearth of clues. See, I'm not the only one! Maxwell asks, "Why commit murders in similar styles to past killers as a copycat would and then write letters making it clear you're not them?"

During this turmoil, attorney Harry Lee Carrick hires the two detectives to investigate a burglary, allegedly committed by his client, handyman Junior Deavor. The robbery took place on the estate of the town's wealthiest and most formidable family, the Battle clan - Southern gothic at its best. Is the entire family, and their history going back to the civil War, introduced to prop up the plot or to confuse the reader?

Then the puzzles begin. Again, who is/are the killer(s)? Who stole what from whom? Motive(s)? How to keep all the characters straight? Who gets killed next? Will Michelle and Sean ever get together? And so on. I did enjoy some of the novel, especially the interaction and banter between King and Maxwell. The plot concerning the serial killer is interesting, as are some of the characters. Bottom line, if you're a Baldacci fan, you'll probably like this, even the confusing parts. Fans of the mystery, suspense thriller genre, who are patient readers, will also enjoy. As I wrote earlier, maybe it's just me! The one thing I do know is that this novel has potential and could have used a better editor.

Lesser Baldacci....lacks his usual smooth structure
By clutchhitter
I dunno, maybe I was spoiled by his earlier books, but this one jams in a lot of murders, a lot of unlikable characters and a couple of action scenes.

THE GOOD NEWS: The action sequences second to none, but they are too few and too late.

THE BAD NEWS: I just gave up keeping all the relationships and motivations straight, not because it gets too complicated (it does) but because you just don't care.

COMPARED TO HIS OTHER WORK: Earlier work had individual plot threads build slowly, gradually coming together until the whole structure becomes clear and then topped off by an race-to-the-finish ending.

THIS TIME: In his attempt to cover TOO much, all the plot threads are short-changed I just didn't care who did what.

Attempts at witty banter between the two heroes falls pretty flat.

His last book (Split Second) was not bad, but this isn't even close to THAT one!

Okay At Best -- And I'm being Generous!
By Bobbewig
I've read all of David Baldacci's books, although in my opinion each new book is a little less good than the one preceding it. And, having read Hour Game, I may be ready to give up on Baldacci -- or, at leat no longer consider him to be one of my 'must read' authors. The Hour Game starts off with a lot of promise, interesting plot and lots of mystery and excitement. However, the book never lived up to its potential. The plot became too muddled and confusing, too many characters were involved and the interval between anything exciting happening was much too drawn out. While Baldacci's latest is just good enough to finish, it's not a book I'd recommend highly to you.
