About the Author
Uri Orlev was born in Warsaw in 1931. He spent the years 1939–41 in hiding in the Warsaw ghetto with his mother and younger brother. When his mother was killed by the Nazis, he and his brother were sent to Bergen-Belsen. After the war, Orlev went to Israel. He now lives in Jerusalem with his wife and their three children.
In 1996, Uri Orlev received the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest international recognition given to an author of children’s books, for his lasting contribution to children’s literature.

It was better than I thought.

This book is a excellant book in which a 11 year old boy tries to survive in the warsaw ghetto. His mom disappears. His father is taken away by the Germans to go work. The boy runs off and now must survive on his own. His fathers friend tells him to stay at a abondened building for as long as it takes for his father to come. He finds a hide out above the ruins. He hides out there with his pet mouse. He makes two new friends when he shoots a german soldier with the gun his father gave him. He saved their lives, but one of them was shoot. It takes care of the man with the wound while the other guy takes care of some buisness. The wounded man tells of a way to get to the other sideof the wall. After a doctor helps the man, he has to leave. The boy is once again alone. He meets some girl on the polish side that becomes his girlfrind. They find a waay to communicate over the wall and he visits her once and awhile. She has to move so they promise after the war to meet in the ghetto on new years eve. The winter is very cold and he probaly cant survive it. His father actually comes back after 7 months.
