Out of tragedy comes joy

Adorable Grant and Johnny Pine--two of the most unlikely people to find their way into each other's lives. Dori works in a small diner, an unwed mother at 16, whose parents were killed when she was very young, leaving her to be raised by her grandparents. Dori and her son live with her grandfather, who has always been there for her every step of the way. She has been judged and found wanting by her neighbors who consider her a young woman with loose morals, her grandfather's good standing in the community the only thing that keeps them from shunning her totally. Johnny Pine is a 20 year old young man, working to support his two younger brothers. With his father in prison for the foreseeable future and his mother dead from an overdose when he was just 18 years old the good people of the community shake their heads and expect the boys to grow up just like their parents., Johnny struggles to raise his sibllings, barely putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads. The eat oatmeal every day, because it is cheap and filling, with or without raisins. When the unthinkable happens, and Dori is left without her grandfather or a place to life, not one of the good people of Blessings, Georgia steps in to help her. She is left stand in the rain with her baby and the diaper bag, alone and desperate. As 20-year-old Johnny watches in disbelief, each of her neighbors walks away, after saying that they'll pray or her. He and his brothers step in and offer shelter to Dori, a most unlikely group of saviors.

Another review mentioned that it was seemingly unrealistic to have two young kids stepping up and taking responsibility for others, and to that I say, hogwash. There are many communities in this day and age, where young people take care of each other out of love and caring for someone other than themselves. They aren't lost on the Internet or chasing the next BBD. This is a story of hope, a story of unconditional love. Stop into Blessings, Georgia, and see for yourself.

Fans of small town contemporary romances are going to fall in love with I’ll Stand By You. Sharon Sala heads back to Blessings, GA where single mom Dori Grant and Johnny Pine, who is the guardian of his two young brothers, fall in love in the midst of hardship.

While she is from the “right” side of the tracks, Dori has weathered more than her fair share of gossip and innuendo after becoming an unwed, teenage mom. With the help of her granddaddy, she has managed to pass her GED and enroll in on-line college classes while also working at a local diner and raising her six month old son, Luther Joe. But one horrible night, Dori loses everything but Luther Joe, and she is shocked when NONE of her neighbors offers to help her out.

Johnny is no stranger to adversity and he is absolutely stunned when Dori’s neighbors abandon her and Luther after her tragic loss. He knows what it is like to be all alone in the world and he does not hesitate to bring them home to stay with him and his brothers Brooks aka Beep and Marshall. Johnny fought hard to keep his brothers after his mother’s death, and although they don’t have much money, he is doing an exemplary job of raising them.

Johnny and Dori are pretty much strangers but they settle into their living arrangements with ease. As word quickly spreads through town about Dori’s plight, most of the townspeople pull together to help her out while others immediately begin spreading vicious rumors about her and Johnny. Fortunately, Dori has a few good people in her corner who are more than willing to stand up for them. And when someone from Dori’s past tries to cash in her good fortune, let’s just say, this person gets EXACTLY what is coming to ’em.

I’ll Stand by You is a charming romance that is a little poignant but very heartwarming. The relationship between Johnny and Dori is soo sweet and even though they fall in love quickly, their feelings for one another ring true. Sharon Sala fully captures both the good and bad of small town life and although there are a few truly despicable townspeople, there are also plenty of kindhearted and generous ones who more than make up for their mean spirited actions. A heartfelt and emotional love story that is incredibly uplifting and gratifying despite the sometimes somber (but always realistic) storyline.

It's the characters that are so important in this series and Sala once again brings us wonderful ones. Not only Dori and Johnny, but Johnny's little brothers and those people in the town who are so willing to lend a hand when needed.

Life hasn’t always been kind to Dori or Johnny, but they have never given up. They work hard at making a good life for those they care about and when life brings them into the same sphere, that dedication expands to encompass both families. But while life keeps throwing them punches, now they have each other and it is so very sweet watching them fall in love. I’m impressed at how, being so young but having to take on so much responsibility, they still manage to keep a good attitude. They aren’t naïve but they aren’t letting it turn them bitter either. They are such a fantastic match and I was so very happy that they found each other.

As with the other books, Sala continues to bring a great cast of secondary characters … unfortunately not all of them have a good heart. It isn’t always pretty, but Sala manages to do a fantastic job of capturing that small town feel. There are caring people, who help and support those around them, but there are also those that only look out for themselves. It’s both kinds of people that bring Dori and Johnny to their eventual HEA. And while it isn’t always roses and sunshine, thee good definitely outweighs the bad in their lives, which I think is what most of us hope for.

If you haven’t read Count Your Blessings (previously titled Color Me Bad) or Curl Up & Dye, it's OK because all of these books can stand on their own. But it does help to give you an idea of the small Southern town charm and politics that Sala captures so well. And as much as I loved the first two stories, I think this one is my favorite (so far, because I can’t wait to see what Sala has in store for us next).

Engineering firms traditionally have sought expert advice on these aspects from management schools, often regarding these aspects of engineering practice as something to do with psychology or organisational behaviour. The results are normally disappointing because management schools and psychologists have limited insight and understanding of the technical dimensions in engineering work. Little if any of the material in this book can be obtained from management texts or courses. Management schools have avoided the technical dimension of workplace practices and that is precisely what characterises engineering practice. The technical dimension infuses almost every aspect of an engineer’s working day and cannot be avoided. That’s why this book is so necessary: there has not yet been any authoritative source or guidance to bridge the gap between inanimate technical issues and organisational behaviour. This book fills this gap in our knowledge, is based on rigorous research, and yet is written in a style which is accessible for a wide audience.

About the Author

Professor James Trevelyan is a Winthrop Professor in the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering School at The University of Western Australia. His main area of research is on engineering practice, and he teaches design, sustainability, engineering practice and project management.
He is well known internationally for pioneering research that resulted in sheep shearing robots (1975-1993).
He and his students produced the first industrial robot that can be remotely operated via the internet in 1994. The robot has been controlled by a conservatively estimated 500,000 people in dozens of countries.
He was presented with the 1993 Engelberger Science and Technology Award in Tokyo in recognition of his work, and has twice been presented with the Japan Industrial Robot Association award for best papers at ISIR conferences. These are the leading international awards for robotics research.
His teaching has also been well recognised: he was presented with the ASME Award for Mechanical and Mechatronics Teaching at the 2003 AAEE Conference in Melbourne. He has earned four distinguished teaching awards at UWA, and received a further best paper award at the 2004 International Conference on Engineering Education Research conference in the Czech Republic.
From 1996 till 2002 he researched landmine clearance methods and his web site is an internationally respected reference point for information on landmines. He was awarded with honorary membership of the Society of Counter Ordnance Technology in 2002 for his efforts, and was also elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
His most recent work is research on engineering practice that aims to understand how engineering work is actually performed, an aspect of engineering that has not been researched before. This work is helping to explain why engineering and process-oriented companies can typically lose 30% of their turnover from engineering, maintenance and operation mistakes. It also helps to explain why engineering services in the developed world seem to cost much more than they should, often much more than in industrialised countries, and is a significant factor inhibiting poverty reduction. Professor Trevelyan is working on education programs that could help overcome shortcomings in engineering training programmes in developing countries.

Insightful and practical

I haven't read this book in its entirety (few people ever will), but I've spent enough time with it to confidently endorse it.

The author describes what it means to be an expert practicing engineer, and provides wise guidance on how to reach and stay at that level during the course of an engineering career. Some of this guidance may appear counterintuitive to novice engineers, but it does resonate with my own thinking based on almost three decades of experience as a practicing engineer, and it's important to note that the book is largely based on extensive research by the author and his colleagues.

Regarding how to approach the book, don't be daunted by its 600+ pages in a smallish font. The book is structured such that you don't need to read it cover to cover, and it probably makes more sense anyway to dip into it here and there, according to your interests and needs. To most benefit from the book, rather than reading it once and then leaving it on the shelf, I suggest revisiting it over and over again through the course of years and perhaps decades ... so keep it handy!

My mother recommended this book to my friend when she was raising her daughter back in the 1980's. My sister felt this book was very helpful when she was raising her three boys in the 1990's. I have purchased this copy to pass on to my daughter who is struggling with her young son.

Some concepts okay, others outdated & ineffective

I'm a Christian parent and have listened to several audiobooks on parenting for my strong-willed children. While some of the concepts in Dobson's book are good old common sense, others do not seem to be effective when parenting a strong-willed child, a child with ADHD or other physical/emotional issues. And of course, the advice on spanking is controversial. If you can spank effectively, that's fine, but the truth is, most of us can't! The idea that you spank a child for discipline purposes only and not as a response to your own anger is purely theory only. How many parents do you see spanking children because they are furious and at their wit's end? Most of us can't do it effectively so there must be a better way! Try listening/reading "Raising Your Spirited Child" or "How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen to So Kids Will Talk". These books will go one step further than Dobson's book and offer alternatives to spanking.

In this book Victor Bulmer-Thomas uses his previously unpublished estimates of the national accounts to explore economic and social development in the five Central American republics from 1920. He examines in detail variations in economic policy between countries which help to account for differences in performance. The major political developments are woven into the analysis and linked to changes in internal and external conditions. Growth under liberal oligarchic rule in the 1920s, heavily dependent on exports of coffee and bananas, was accompanied by modest reform programmes. The 1929 depression, which hit the region hard, undermined most of the reforms and ushered in a period of dictatorial rule in all republics except Costa Rica. The Second World War, particularly after the entry of the United States, at first strengthened the dictatorships, but ultimately produced challenges to rule by authoritarian caudillos. The social upheavals accompanying the post-war export-led boom forced governments in each republic to address the question of economic, social and political reform.

About the Author
Victor Bulmer-Thomas is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of London and Honorary Professor with the Institute of the Americas, University College London. He is also a Senior Distinguished Fellow of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London; an Associate Fellow in the Americas Program at Chatham House, where he was the Director from 2001 to 2006; and was Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies, University of London, from 1992 to 1998. His publications include The Economic History of the Caribbean Since the Napoleonic Wars (2012), The Political Economy of Central America Since 1920 (1987) and Input-Output Analysis for Developing Countries (1982). He is also co-editor of The Cambridge Economic History of Latin America (2006).

The 155mm assault gun M53 was developed with components taken from M47 Patton medium tanks during the Cold War. The M53, with its 155 mm primary gun, delivered long range support to allied positions, and its self-propelled design enabled it to travel great distances. The M53 eventually saw action with both the United States Army and Marine Corps. Pacific Car & Foundry Company was responsible for assembly. Beginning in 1956, the United States Army upgraded its M53 line to the M55. The M55 was a fully armored self-propelled artillery based on the M53 155mm assault gun. It had a 203.2 mm howitzer which could traverse 30° left or right, carrying only 10 rounds of ammunition. The gun had a maximum range of 16,916 meters with a rate of fire of one round every two minutes. The engine was mounted in the front and drove through a front-drive sprocket. The driver's cupola is visible on the front left of the turret, and spare track blocks were stored on the turret front. The M55 saw action during the Vietnam War, and was then withdrawn from US military service. Created in 1957, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M53’s design and capabilities. Intended as a commander’s manual for training crew members, it details many methods of attaining effecient teamwork while operating the gun. Drills are described in detail, with the ultimate goal being the successful operation of the M53 and M55 on the battlefield. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.
