About the Author

Brandon Sanders

Brandon Sanders is an 18-year-old roboticist who spends much of his time designing, building, and programming new and innovative systems, including simulators, autonomous coffee makers, and robots for competition. At present, he attends Gilbert Finn Polytechnic (which is a homeschool) as he prepares for college. He is the founder and owner of Mechakana Systems, a website and company devoted to robotic systems and solutions. As a home-educated student, he's had the unique opportunity to focus his efforts on the fields that interest him. This has made him successful as the team captain for the FIRST Robotics teams: #4982 Cafe Bot and #1444 the Lightning Lancers. He has also served as a scientific research assistant to the Chairman of the Washington University Physics Department, where he wrote software to aid in the calculation of equations of state for dense matter in neutron stars. He has received numerous awards and accolades as a result of his involvement in various programs. Two of his most notable achievements are FIRST Robotics Competition Dean's List Award and FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship Inspire Award.

The title of the book ‘Mastering Leap Motion’ suggests that this book is aimed for those who are willing to become professional Leap Motion developers. In fact, this book has a very practical approach to achieve this goal. The author assumes within this book that those who read it have a sufficient prior knowledge of programming languages, therefore this book is not teaching you how to program, but how to combine both your programming skills and the Leap Motion. For those who are interested in mastering the Leap Motion, I highly recommend to at least have experience with Java and in particular with Object Oriented Programming.
Sanders begins by helping you to set up both the Leap Motion device and the Integrated Development Environment. This is followed by going through the most important classes of the SDK, i.e. the Hand, the Finger, the Vector, the Frame, the Controller and the Listener class.
The next few chapters guide you towards understanding the Leap Motion itself and the best practices for overcoming design problems. However the book could have gone more in depth of the actual classes, it does a great job creating a mind-set to reach the requested level of user experience. It makes you aware of ergonomics and user fatigue, but most importantly the experience guidelines that every Leap Motion developer should follow.
When enough conceptual knowledge has been gained after reading these few chapters, the author provides you with several step-by-step examples of building applications. The first application is a 2D drawing application, written in Java Swing. This is directly followed by creating another application with another dimension, but this time in Unity using C#. From start to end, the book teaches you how to combine Unity 3D with the Leap Motion by building a controllable flying entity.
The final chapters of the book are focussed on both the author’s experience in robotics and going beyond the Leap Motion, by providing several topics of real-world usage of the device. In my opinion, the author could have gone further into this, by also including other topics, such as application for healthcare and education. Real-world usage in my opinion does not only include the ‘fun’ side of the device, but also the serious and professional side where the Leap Motion could make a difference in a person’s daily life.
Another great property of the book is that everything is very readable, accompanied by lots of illustrating and relevant images and several fun facts and not-so-fun facts.

Conclusion: The book is great for programmers and hobbyists who want to directly jump into the world of Leap Motion and start developing applications for real-world use. It has a lot of practical examples and goes in depth of both the user experience and developing guidelines.
On the other hand however, it might have missed an opportunity to go a bit deeper into the properties of classes and thus creating a nice overview for programmers to use during development. The actual development and code are encapsulated in great step-by-step examples using a variety of programming languages and engines. The term ‘Mastering’ might be a little too far-fetched, since it gets you from the beginning to a point where you should be able to start developing your own applications with the help of the documentation and other resources. This book is a great starting point to add the Leap Motion to your arsenal of devices and it helps you getting the most out of it.

You'll need good experience with programming languages in general, and with C# and Java in particular. The book is really well organised, and the author guides you in its 229 pages on the path to Leap Motion development mastery.

A recomendable book about Leap Motion

Generally, it is a recomendable book in order to learn leap motion to create some applications.

The author explains how to use leap motion with Java and Unity, you will learn how to create an application in 2D and 3D. In addition, there is some chapters that show you to set up the device and even there is a chapter which it is explained to use the unity game engine, if you have never used it.

I bought the book because I wanted to do 3D applications with leap motion and to be honest I thought that the book had more examples about 3D applications with Unity. There are two examples and they are not very difficult for a advance book about programming with this device.

This booklet was an extremely basic overview, with absolutely no How To at all!

Not only was there no instruction on how to apply the concepts discussed, but the book demonstrates a lack of editorship, and a desperate need for that editor. Many sentences throughout the book are missing words, and sometimes even most of the sentence is missing and then the next sentence starts and you have no idea what's going on. Spelling, Grammar, and word choice is acceptable throughout, but the author frequently messes up on capitalization and punctuation.

I'd say, save your dollar, skip this book, and get a real how to book instead.

A splendid image -- and an incredible aid to learning

Steve DeLong and his company have come up with another winner for wine lovers: a map of wine organized like a subway map showing the leading wine regions of France.

The map was created by Dr. David Gissen, an architectural theorist whose publications (including a blog, and Subnature: Architecture's Other Environments), explore unusual aspects of urban nature. While working on other projects, he explored French wines as he describes in a wonderful interview on the Edible Geography website [link in the first Comment].

He was initially confused the complexity of French wines, the impractical advice he received to meet with the winemakers, and the literal nature of wine maps. He believed it would be easier to grasp "ideas and principles about French wine if you used a visual language that was relational and condensed. To me, that means the language of the subway map."

Gissen describes two of his major discoveries using this approach:

"One thing I only learned through making the map was that all the "lines," with just a few exceptions, follow rivers or coastlines. You would not necessarily understand, by looking at a normal French wine map, the absolute centrality of the rivers, which are the routes that the Greeks and Romans used as they were moving through France and planting vines.

"Some of the rivers also connect regions. For example, you can see how the Burgundy and Rhône regions are connected through river systems. Another thing I didn't know before doing my map, which would be so obvious to someone who knew a lot about wine, is a lot of the South West region's most famous wines extend along the river that connect it to Bordeaux. The map shows that connection, up the Garonne or the Dordogne into central Bordeaux."

The final version of his map makes both of th0se points wonderfully clear. And, it also makes another important historical point. Wine lovers know that Bordeaux was for many, many years heavily favored among wine lovers in London, while the wines of Burgundy and the Rhone were favored in Paris. Hugh Johnson's the Story of Wine traces these histories in very readable detail; one can see the great benefits water transportation had for carrying Bordeaux wines to England by ship and Burgundies and Rhone wines by barge to Paris.

It is well worth studying this map in greater detail; there are other connections that will become clear -- how various varieties are distributed, for example -- and there are many details to criticize -- all varieties are treated equally, for example.

Whatever your reaction, I agree with Gissen: "Nonetheless, although this map is just sort of fun, you can also learn a lot about wine from it. But I don't even care if people use it that way -- what I love about it is that it pulls wine into the language of cities and urban life."

Best of all, this beautiful map will fit into a standard 18x24 inch frame. Enjoy and learn!

Nice goods but, arrived slightly damaged

Beautiful posters which came as described BUT, the posters and book ( I purchased a similar poster of California and a sommelier book as well) all came slightly damaged. The posters were each packed in a sturdy cardboard packing cylinder yet, each was slightly bent/crumpled near the corners. Not what you want to see if your framing them in a "floating frame" and giving them as a gift! The poster packaging cylinders arrived consolidated in a larger box that included the book. The cylinders were completely unharmed. "Ergo", they must have been damaged in the packaging process. Similarly and disturbingly, the book was placed inside the larger box completely unprotected. Of course, the book also came slightly damaged as the items were completely free to shift during shipping. Another imperfect gift to give to the same person. A packaging "hat trick" as it were. You'd think Amazon would have figured out by now how to properly ship posters and books by now. Maybe a cheap protective sleeve for the book at least. C'mon Amazon! Free shipping shouldn't mean careless packaging. Without that, I was completely satisfied with the items themselves. Otherwise, too late in the holiday season to return!

The deliver time was great but when I unpacked the poster it came out with a crumpled corner - which was to little to claim and then again annoying to look at.

The terror began right when Maggie slept in the canopy bed..

I thought this book would be much better by the cover and the back summary. I wanted to read it badly, so i did. it only took me a day to finish it! It was good, yet very shocking. It isn't very scary, but pretty suspensful.
The book is about a girl named Maggie who moves into a creppy house on Fear street. When she goes into the room she chose, she finds an old fashioned pink canopy bed. She falls in love with it right away. but the minute she lies down in the bed, she starts seeing a girl getting murdered. But it got worse. the horrible dreams got more grusome, and when they started happening, Maggie was even more terrofied. Can Maggie stop it?
My advice: IF U LIKE MY SUMMARY FOR IT, THEN U WILL LIKE IT. READ IT:) ITS GREAT!

bad dreams

My book "bad dreams" is about a girl named Maggie Travers who is moving into a new house with her mom and her sister, Andrea, and her dog Gus. ever since her father died they became very poor and had to move to a house on Fear Street Ave. they get to their new house and as maggie gets inside depressed because of the move. she walkes to her room and inside she sees a beautiful canopy bed. she calles her mom and her sister in to see the new bed mom andrea! maggie shouted come in here quick hurry!as they walk in her sisters jaw drops in jealousy. her sister Andrea was always extremly jealous of maggie because she was much better at everything. maggie pleaded her mom to let her keep the bed. her mom says yes and maggie is very happy. that night maggie goes to sleep and while she is sleeping she has terrible dreams of a girl getting tourcherd and stabed by someone. maggie has these dreams every night and stars to wonder if she is having these dreams as a warning that something bad is going to happen.

This book is just really to scare you it doesn't have a message it is just a thrilling story. i think other kids reading this will think it is a great book and will be looking farward to readin the rest of the R.L Stine books.

my oppion on this book is that it is very saspenceful and thrilling. Other kids reading this book will think it is a great book and will want to keep reading. and im planning on reading the rest of his great books.

the author did a very good job writing this book. he made it so that you want to keep reading it is vey thrilling a saspence ful and i hope he writs more in the future.

I liked this book, I thought the idea was original-having bad dreams about girl being killed in your bed.

I don't really get scared by RL Stine's books, but I have to admit, it was kinda creepy. I like how he describes how Maggie is trying to fall asleep and it's scary. We all can relate to that. I know sometimes when I'm trying to fall asleep, and I hear noises outside, it freaks me out.

The ending is kinda hard to believe for me, but I still never really saw it coming. Well I like the way he ended it, because I hate when the killer turns out to be a ghost or a vampire or something like that. this way, it was more realistic.

I want to share a special story with you. I am an adult special education teacher who has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome/Disorder. Almost everything in my "personal" vs "work" life has been so disorganized. I have tons of late fees, I dont pay the bills on time, ect, ect. My apartment is so cluttered that I almost was ready to give up. I would come home from work, get on the computer and then fall asleep. when I went out shopping, I would impulse buy rather than think first "Do I really need this?" I never donated items, I just kept them because I "thought I would need them someday." i found Jamie's blog on a website. I purchased this book and i'm about 1/2 way finished with decluttering my 1 bedroom apartment. Yes folks, this works for us single people too. Jamie, you have the most "fun" job in the world. I love organizing and decluttering my classroom, but I never knew how to do it with my own living space. I have made over 4 trips to Goodwill this week alone. Trust me if you have a home, you need this book. It won't cost you a thing to buy extra either. She shows how to turn a pile of junk into an organized living space.
