Melts in your mouth

Winnicott gave me this book when I saw him in 1968. It was in a British edition including BBC talks. He gave me several others which all were wonderful too, but this one I loved the most.

It opened me in ways I didn't even know. I read it over and over.

You'd think it's not for Dads - but I can tell you it is. It touched me through and through.

The 3 day walking guides were excellent in terms of their detail and tips. Thanks to this we had a relaxing coffee under the tree at la Biela and a meal and tango show at Tortoni's which were among the highlights of our short time in BA. The la Boca restaurant that was recommended in the guide was quite a distance from the tourist area and we were strongly advised against walking there.

However more basic practical information (changing money, translation of BA food to make reading the menu easier etc) is necessary. We were in BA such a short time (3 days) that we needed all the help we could get to make the most of this beautiful and interesting city. Also to encourage travelling by subway - very easy to use, fast, clean and many with original tiling rather than buses.

This is a brilliant guide to use with another more comprehensive guide book.

True Insider's Look at Buenos Aires

I'd been to Buenos Aires before, and this time around I was looking to dive a little deeper. This e-book was they key for me to uncovering the real gems of the city. Restaurant and cafe recommendations pointed me to unique spots where only locals hang out. And the walking tour information and maps were easy to follow and super informative. No need for Lonely Planet when you have this kind of personal guidebook in your pocket. Can't recommend it enough.

Great for a short visit but incomplete as a travel guide

The title proves to be true: this is a great guide for 3 days in Buenos Aires. I followed two days of this guide and enjoyed my experience. It hits the highlights and provides easily walkable self-guided tours (the author states when it would be preferable to take a taxi or the subway). I felt I got a diverse and deeper appreciation of the city than a tour bus would give. The major districts are hit, including San Telmo, Palermo, etc. This guide also provides strong restaurant picks, although it tends to underestimate their prices. La Brigada, a highly regarded parrilla (steakhouse), is a wonderful restaurant but definitely not 'cheap' as the guide suggests. I was impressed, though, when I spoke with a US student studying in Buenos Aires, and she had heard good things about most of the suggested restaurants.

Be forewarned, this book simply gives itineraries. You won't learn much about Argentina or Buenos Aires' culture and history (aside from the itineraries' attractions). There isn't any info on lodging. Unlike the book description suggests, you'll need to do 'additional research on Buenos Aires' in order to complete your trip. A more thorough guide would be The TRUE Insider's Guide To Buenos Aires 2012, Lonely Planet, or Frommer's. There's also some new Kindle apps that provide itineraries. Hyperlinks in the book are hit or miss. All that said, you could have a great 3 day trip using just this and some dedicated web searches to fill in the gaps.

Sick & Entertaining

Ryan Harding creates a rich and disturbing world in GENITAL GRINDER. While brutally grotesque, there is substance and story behind everything that happens. It's not just pointless gross outs like a lot of Extreme Horror. Most of the stories have very interesting concepts and there are great anecdotes throughout that really draw you into the stories.

Here's a short synopsis on a few of the stories that stood out to me:

DEVELOPMENT is about a high school student who develops film part time. The customers seem rather naïve and he starts a scrap book of their more intimate photos. Things take a turn when someone drops off some very disturbing film...

EMISSARY: Gabriel works at Movie Heaven. He's always had a fascination with Mondo movies. When Taste of Death 5: Into the Grave is released he starts seeing dead people around town.

GENITAL GRINDER II: DIS-MEMBERED is the best story featuring Von and Greg who also appear in two other stories in this collection. In this one they come up with a get-rich-quick-scheme involving severing a wealthy man's penis through a glory hole at a strip club and holding it for ransom. Things go awry.

Mash together Richard Laymon's storytelling, Ray Bradbury's creativity and Edward Lee's sexual deviancy and you get Ryan Harding's GENITAL GRINDER.

Should I lend this to my mother?

Blasphemous, perverse, evil, mean-spirited, vile, deviant, abnormal...

These are the adjectives, well some of them, that could be used to describe Deadite's recent collection of short stories by Ryan Harding. The forward by Edward Lee had me wondering if the man himself was just trying to sell the guys writings. But, no! every word is true. Ryan Harding is one messed up guy!

Honestly that is a good thing in my books and if any clinical doctor knew it I might find myself with a fancy new jacket and an interesting prescription.

Well this collection is for the weirdo's, the sicko's, and the disturbed that are looking for something to curl up and read. Probably with no pants on...

We get 8 short to longish stories. A forward by Edward Lee and Mr. Harding (should I call this guy Mister?) gives an in depth description of the birthing process of each nasty tale.

Since I'm one of those weirdo's/sicko's I mentioned above I loved every sickening moment of this collection. Highlights are the three Greg and Von stories: Damaged Goods (a sick tale of their adventurous night with a woman they happen to find) Genital Grinder (they get together to film the ultimate snuff film) and Genital Grinder 2 (yes!! more of the same.)

The other stories: Bottom Feeder, Sharing Needles, Development, Emissary and First indications give another side to the pestilent wordage this man can assemble. With stories about one night stands gone awry, serial killers and the cause and effect of watching too many shockumentaries.

Pay close attention while reading this collection as all the tales take place in the imaginary town of Bartok, which is seemingly populated by serial killers, perverts, the deranged and guys who lose their minds. At least I hope it's imaginary?! Characters pop up here in there throughout each story and this is one of the things I loved, which made this more then a collection of sick vintages, but a detailed mythos that Mr. Harding could elaborate on, if he would ever come back to writing...please come back and give us more!!

Get this one fast if you are a fan of Lee, Wrath, Ketchum, disgusting porn and extreme horror in general. Plus you get an awesome cover by Suzzan Blac to stare at while on the crapper where you may decided to store your copy!!

Gory Goodness

Before reading this book I had never heard of Ryan Harding, but Deadite Press have a good history thus far of publishing only great authors and when the introduction is done by someone like Edward Lee then it was always going to be worth a try.

The book is a selection of short stories with most of them having a similar theme to them - hardcore violence - but this isn't just a straight forward gore fest as there is a story behind the tales which is not something you always get with the more extreme books.

Self-help without the jargon

This title was a recent selection for a book discussion group that I helped organize for my library. As the only male in the group, I felt somewhat compelled to offer token protest to the selection of this classic example of a "woman's book," but actually I was intrigued by it. Everything I had read about "Gift From the Sea" praised its meditative quality and I had to admit that the promise of that rather appealed to me.
I wound up reading the bulk of the book on Mothers' Day, which seemed quite appropriate, given that among the many issues Lindbergh addresses here is the need for mothers to find a balance between their own needs and those of their children and husbands. The need for time to one's self, a "room of one's own", the need for a spriritual dimension to one's existence--well, it seems so obvious that these needs have to be met if a woman--if any human being--is to be fulfilled and to be able to meet her (or his) responsibilities with joy rather than with dread. But the lessons that Anne Morrow Lindbergh taught in 1955 still need to be voiced in 2000--perhaps more than ever. Lindbergh seems prescient when she speaks of the dangers of the "life of multiplicity" which had already taken root in the immediate post-War era. We know all too well that it has not gotten any better in the past 50 years and that women's lives in particular have become more stressful and, to use Lindbergh's word, "fragmented" in the past half-century.
What distinguishes Lindbergh's book from today's current crop of self-help or New Age sprititual books though is its lyrical quality. Her careful, belletristic prose is soothing and, yes, meditative in and of itself. Reading it seems to bring about the very centeredness and balance that she seeks to describe.
Although she includes no bibliography (and rightly so, as this is not a tract), I would hope that many of her readers would be inspired to seek out the works of some of the writers she quotes in the context of these essays. She does the world a great service in suggesting how Rilke, for example, whose poetry may seem impenetrable at first, can actually speak to the concerns of our own lives.

A Few Shells

What timeless wisdom there is in this little book. Although it was written many decades ago, the challenges and issues faced by Anne Morrow Lindbergh are the same ones faced by women in today's crazy, bustling world. In fact, although women in Siberia, Cameroon, or Ceylon might not have her specific set of circumstances, they can still identify with Lindbergh's ponderings about a woman's life, her obligations, her relationships, and her needs. She lived in an upscale suburb of Connecticut and was the mother of five children, and yet there's something in her writing that can touch the souls of women everywhere whether in a grass hut or trailer beside a busy highway

The chapters in Gift from the Sea center on Lindbergh's musings during a two-week vacation at the shore. Leaving husband, children, and house behind, she lives in a bare beach cabin without heat, telephone, plumbing, hot water, rugs, or curtains. She finds simplicity beautiful and longs to take it home to Connecticut when her vacation ends.

Lindbergh takes a shell at a time and describes it in relation to other things in a woman's life. For instance, the moon shell reminds her that quiet time, solitude, contemplation, and "something of one's own" is needed. The double-sunrise represents the pure relationship found in early stages of friendship and marriage, and she reminds the reader that there is no permanent return to an old form of relationship since all are in the process of change. The oyster bed symbolizes the middle years of marriage and family, especially as the home itself grows and expands to accommodate the growing family.

I first read this book when I was a young mother and could readily understand Lindbergh's comment that saints were so rarely married woman because of the distractions inherent in raising children and running a house. "Human relationships with their myriad pulls--woman's normal occupations in general run counter to creative life, or contemplative life, or saintly life." Now in midlife, I can better understand her affinity for all the shells as reminders that each cycle of the wave, the tide, and the relationship is valid.

Love the introspect about relationships and family

I have had my copy since the early 80's, this book is timeless. With renewed interest, I bought several copies for friends after reading The Aviators Wife, A book about the Lindbergh's. Giving one to a bride who is having a beach themed wedding. Love the introspect about relationships and family.
