About the Author
Clyde P. Stickney is the Signal Companies' Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College. He received his DBA from Florida State University and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Tuck School in 1977. He has also taught at business schools in Japan, Australia, Finland, and Germany. Prof. Stickney has authored and coauthored books on financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis.

Roman L. Weil, Ph.D., CPA, is the V. Duane Rath Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Chicago and has within recent years been Visiting Professor at the Haas School of the University of California, Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Harvard Law School; Princeton University; and New York University. He has designed and implemented continuing education programs for partners at two of the large accounting firms and for employees at several operating corporations. Dr. Weil has co-authored dozens of books. His lay articles have appeared in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in academic and professional journals, most recently on financial literacy for corporate governance and on the exposure of wine snobbery.

Katherine Schipper is the Thomas F. Keller Professor of Accounting at the Duke University, Fuqua School of Business. She is a former Board member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), a past president of the American Accounting Association and a winner of its Outstanding Educator award, and a member of the Accounting Hall of Fame.

Jennifer Francis is the Douglas and Josie Breeden Doctoral Professor of Accounting and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business. Her research and teaching expertise in financial reporting, equity valuation, and security analysts' role in the capital markets has led to over a dozen teaching awards.

complete and clear but not concise

Used this book as a support for Financial Accounting class in Business School. It is very complete, provides clear explanation and many examples. However it is not concise, and for that reason of limited use. Explanations are often drawn out and the use of examples is sometimes excessive. This means, that in practice, it cannot be used as a quick look-up reference book.

Would have been a 5-star textbook if it covered the same material in half as much text.

“Yoga at Home” by Linda Sparrowe is to me a book of stunning yoga poetry; with each contributor’s chapter as a verse in an epic poem. The vibrant photos of over fifty yogis and yoginis, personal stories and insight, as well as ideas for home practice, weave and dance as they blend into a book of whole yoga.
The diversity of philosophy, practice, age and ability featured in Linda’s book, help me, a newly certified yoga teacher in rural Colorado, feel part of a larger welcoming yoga community. From creating a space for personal practice to using props and tools as well as the practices and sequences, “Yoga at Home” is a never-ending source of practical and spiritual ideas and insights for my personal practice and for teaching my students.

Inspirational and captivating!

Once I began reading Yoga At Home, by Linda Sparrowe, I felt a wave of relief and a burst of inspiration. For many years I have been interested in yoga but felt self-conscious attending a class(being a newbie), rarely made time for myself, and the thought of doing yoga at home left me feeling overwhelmed, not knowing where to begin. I enjoyed reading that pretty much any area can be 'your yoga space'. It can be a room totally devoted to yoga or depending on your space, it can be small area in a multi-purpose room - there is no right or wrong place as long as you are comfortable there. I even smiled as I read the chapter from Bas Van Koll who has a goal of 30 minutes of yoga each morning, even though it is far from tranquil as his kids climb on him he makes it work - to me, that signifies that many of us cannot have that alone time but we can still benefit greatly from meditation and yoga. Linda captured an array of opinions and ideas that left me yearning to learn even more. I have read through most of the book and find it hard to put it down. It is captivating, motivational and the photos help capture attention.

Incredible book, contains a true behind the scenes view of some of the west's most accomplished yogis. This book rightly draws attention to the heart of the Yoga described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika which is the home practice. The practices taught in studios across the US is a structure that is made compatible with the economics of yoga studios, which are not particularly lucrative, but fit in to the "Group Fitness" model of aerobics, Zumba and the like.

So this form of symbiotic arrangement where Yoga molds itself to the economic model of late capitalism is intriguing, but something essential is lost in this translation.

Linda Sparrowe is one of the keepers of the authentic yoga in the West. With this book she rekindles the conversation about the heart of yoga which is the home practice. This is deeply meaningful of course to yoga teachers, who unfortunately are often too tired from teaching to kindle enough of a home practice. This is just the honest truth. But the stillness one can attain at home is unmatched, and the ability to truly practice again and again coming to one's own practice space is truly the heart of the most profound yoga available to anyone.

This book will rekindle your yoga practice if you are a teacher or student. The practices you will learn and see in this book will ignite, inspire, enthuse and help rekindle the light of yoga in the west, and is again a brilliant contribution to the discourse of the evolution of modern yoga.

Notes and staves, and then lyrics

For a long time, differences between the U.K. and the U.S.A. in their commonly used pew hymnals -- both in nomenclature and in composition -- kept this Yank from getting the kind of book he wanted for his collection. Over time I learned that HYMNS ANCIENT AND MODERN is better thought of as a wide range of hymnals rather than just one title. You may already know that the most common type of English pew hymnal doesn't display music and lines ("notes and staves") but just lyrics, or "words only." If you want a reasonably modern hymnal that is based on standard, authoritative sources (but not 'authorised,' see below), and has music as well as words, ask for it by full name: HYMNS ANCIENT & MODERN NEW STANDARD EDITION FULL MUSIC AND WORDS. This volume consists of the highly regarded HYMNS ANCIENT & MODERN from 1950 to which two supplements have been added (that is, tacked on not worked in): 100 HYMNS FOR TODAY (1969) and MORE HYMNS FOR TODAY (1980), for a total of 1,151 pages. This I know because, sensibly, the book shows elapsed pages as well as numbers of hymns, which don't correspond to elapsed pages. A typical entry will have the "notes and staves" (music) separate: music on the left, words on the right or sometimes, music at the top and words at the bottom of the page. In very rare instances the words are worked into the music, between the treble-clef part and the bass-clef part, as an American hymnal typically would.

But the fun of this is not the layout so much as familiar foreignness of the book. First is the way familiar tunes are matched up with (frequently) equally familiar words, but not in the way we're used to. For example, "Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above" is available in two different tune settings from what Americans would expect. The wonderful old German tune we're used to pairing with those lyrics, 'MIT FREUDEN ZART,' shows up much later in the hymnal with entirely different words ("Let us employ all notes of joy / And praise that never endeth"). This offers wonderful creative opportunities to the organist or choir master who enjoys the challenge of fresh (but metrically correct) interpretations. (As in any good modern hymnal, tune names are amply documented in the indices.) The other aspect of this hymnal is that it contains material not apt to be found in any American hymnal: the tune 'JERUSALEM,' for example, with its William Blake lyrics: "And did those feet in ancient times walk upon England's mountain
green? . . . "

This volume is everything I wanted. The hymns are so foundational I say "authoritative," but they are not "authorised" if by that is meant "mandated." Apparently no version of HYMNS ANCIENT AND MODERN is absolutely required to be used in any Church of England (Anglican) church at the parish level. This contrasts strongly with the requirement that American Episcopalians use an Episcopal hymnal in their worship services. Thus H.A.&.M. in any of its many manifestations is not bound to be in the pews of every U.K. church you may visit, not even Anglican ones, though you will run into it fairly often. It's a very powerful hymnal both for its breadth and as a cultural force. I do realize that the retail price of this version is a little high, but used ones are out there.

The 'old' hymns as they SHOULD be sung?!

I just love the 'old' hymns (compared to many of the 'folky' tunes of today) and they are ALL here. All the popular tunes and wonderful, inspiring words just flow together in this volume. Just a shame you don't hear them sung that much in a great many churches now. There is such dignity and Godliness in these Hymns, so do yourself a favor. Buy this, sing the hymns and educate yourself in what used to be beautiful, reverent, and spiritually comforting tunes. This book is perfectly laid out to with SYLLABIC guide for tunes as well as by composer and title of hymn. It doesn't get any better than this!!

lacks objectivity

These hymns are bland and, mainly, boring. Harmonies are of the sugary type one would expect from A. & M. Nowhere near the objectivity of the N.E..H.

Why pay for this when you’ve already got 100 Hymns for Today in paperback – just to get it again in hard covers?

Any what use is it when it hasn’t got the office hymns – for those of us who still get good numbers to Evensong?

An Intelligent and Engaging Medical Mystery

This is a medical mystery and takes place in South Africa. I enjoyed reading about the lives of the characters which were so far removed from my own. The author has packed a great deal of mystery and suspense into a relatively short novel, and it's done quite well. We follow several characters as they work through not only a suspicious death, but some clever computer hacking as well.

The Prodigal is intelligent and well-edited. There was a great deal of medical terminology mentioned, but certainly not to the point where a novice would have trouble following the story line. I did find Daniel's character to be dark and disturbing (animal lovers beware...there's a nasty scene that I personally found upsetting), but obviously readers were supposed to see him this way. Some of the awful things he did made my skin crawl, so the author has done a great job painting the picture of a deeply disturbed individual.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes reading engaging medical mysteries. I'd certainly read another book by this author again!

Just loved this medical drama.

One of those 'unputdownable' books. Medical drama and enthralment and intrigue with a serious twist.... Congrats to the author. She captured and painted a story that needed very little coloring in. Hope she has started the next one....

Any medical book fascinates me. And when there is a twist and its a page turner, it's the best. I downloaded this on a Saturday and could not put it down. Beautifully written. Well done for a debut novel.
