I have bought 5 or more of these books for gifts after my daughter got it as a gift. We read it multiple times a day. It has a wonderful message and beautifully illustrated pages. It's is clearly my daughter's favorite and mine as well! Highly recommended!! :)

Great for High Beginning ESL

This was a very successful reader for my high beginning community college ESL class. Students are interested in the topic because of the movie, of course, but quickly become immersed in the real story.

Good writing topics: Do online research about one of the people mentioned in the book, and write mini research paper.
Do research about two of the people in the book, and compare them (i.e. Mrs. Astor and Mrs. Straus OR Captain Smith and Bruce Ismay).
What were all the causes of this disaster?
Do some research--What were some outcomes of this disaster?

Excellent ESL resource

This book is an excellent resource for teaching English Language Learners. I have taught it to levels 1, 2, 3, and this unit is always a hit. The book is written well, interesting to the kids, and good for advanced beginners or low intermediate students learning English. I highly recommend this book for ESL teachers. It is very engaging and lends itself well to thought provoking discussions, various reading strategies, and writing prompts. Great teaching tool.

my son was last year in grade 1 , he read this story during summer, it was good story , he knew some countries like Ireland and some cities like New Yourk, unbelievable thing that he felt sorry and sad upon reading the sad ending of the ship passengers, I did not expect that he will have this feeling.

He is highly intelligent, and he had the highest self-esteem UNTIL he started to attend school in a well-to-do and predominately white district. Recently he has been feeling as though he's not "good enough" and even stated to me (his confidant) that he wishes he were white. He has already noticed, and is being affected by "white privilege" and the idea that America puts out there that white people have set the standard for handsomeness and/or beauty. It's awful what this society is doing to our children. This book is teaching him why he looks the way he does and I remind him that all of human mankind originated from the Black race but that no race is superior to another. His parents have been reading "Melanin 'N' Me" in hopes that it will restore the pride that his parents has instilled in him, but he seems to be losing now that he's surrounded by white children. He's attending a very good private school where his parents are paying university-like tuition rates, and he continues to excel academically, however his little self-esteem is falling. It is my hope that this book will help. I highly recommend this book, and encourage every parent with a Black or Brown child purchase them (I bought both; each written by a different author).
