Great book.

Great little book, just keep in mind it's more from the residential perspective. You'll find a lot of "been there!" moments. Nice for a little bit of a gut check for when you think you know everything, cuz nobody does.

Oh yeah, and the chapters are very bite-sized. Perfect for taking a seat in the erhm...home office.

Surprised I haven't seen this one at the partshouses, actually....

Funny stuff from a tradesman

Pretty funny anecdotes from a guy who has been in the trades a long time. There are a lot of typos and misspellings, some bad grammar and the like. Overall, though, that stuff doesn't matter much - it's about the years of funny experiences the author is imparting to you.
I'm a handyman, not an HVAC tech, so some of the finer points he makes in his stories went over my head, but I enjoyed them nonetheless.

THE indispensable book on silent comedy

This book is not only the single best volume ever written about silent film comedy, but the best about silent film, period. Only Kevin Brownlow's The Parade's Gone By even comes close. There are chapters on the mechanics and aesthetics of silent film that should be read by everyone with an interest in the form. In addition, his chains of reasoning and perceptions are put forth with an aptness and lucidity that conceals the depth of the intellectual analysis. The elegantly straightforward prose makes this book a joy to read from start to finish. Further, in addition to covering the film work of the "big four" (Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, and Langdon) Kerr also sheds welcome light on lesser-known and even forgotten figures, such as the "unexpected" Raymond Giffith. Finally, this is a book that was well-produced on every level, right down to the layout, chapter headings, and fonts. Numerous film stills of every size (inluding some generous two-page spreads) make it a feast for the eyes as well as the mind, cogently and often playfully setting off the text. The original hardback edition published by Knopf was meant as a sort of intelligent coffee-table book (most assuredly NOT an oxymoron in this case), and the present oversized-paperback edition provided by the good folks at Da Capo should be seen in the same light. Both a celebration of silent comedy and a superb investigation of the form. Also a book that you can dip into again and again over the years with undiminished pleasure and come away with reinvigorated enthusiasm for the subject. If you don't have it, get it.

What Kerr has essentially revealed in this book is the very pulse by which the silent comedic form remaines timeless. He manages to write his book with such a love, yet such an intellectual understanding, that much like the art form he analyzes, it is a book devoid of snootiness or cynicsm. The book has many stengths, but carries such weight because it isn't only pre-occupied with Keaton and Chaplin. The chapters on Harold Lloyd -- who remains understudied -- are very insightful, yet objective. And while other silent comedians aren't given quite space that the major four American comedians are (Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Langdon), a respectable analysis of Arbuckle, Sennett, Linder, Laurel and Hardy, and many more are presented. Valuable perspectives on "non-comedic" actors like Fairbanks, Pickford, and Gish are also hearty reading.
Kerr also give great insight into aesthetic issues, such as music composition and presentation, varying artists' cutting techniques, the roles of women in selected films, the alternate use of frame rates, and much, much, more. What makes the book so refreshing to read is how very much Kerr loves his subject, not necassarilly his subjects. Most books about the silent comedians -- Keaton and Chaplin in particular -- cannot help but devote numerous pages and even chapters to the filmmaker's vices (i.e. Chaplin's womanizing, Keaton's alcoholism). Kerr mentions such subjects when pertinent, but they do not become the book's thrust, nor are such issues presented to undercut the artist or his work in any way. Flawed men these clowns were, but their work remains relatively perfect.

Extremely disappointing

This book has many problems. I will be sending mine back to Amazon as soon as I find my packing tape.
1: The "amulet" itself. From the cover illustration, I figured it would be the forehead-ornament on the black feathered costume which is featured prominently. Not so: the amulet is a lump of black, with bronzey ropes across it. The amulet opens like a locket. It is the ugliest piece of plastic jewelry I've seen in a long time.
2: The plot. I'd hoped that the story would be worthwhile. It is not. Amidala realizes her amulet is missing, she and a handmaiden go to look for it, they find it and return. No adventures. No uplifting tale. No additional background to the movie.
The only thing worthy about this "book" is the box that it comes in, which is pretty and would make a fairly decent 'secret box' for a child. But those are easy to come by or to make yourself.

a rare jewel of a book

A sweetheart of a book, written along the lines of a classic fairy tale. My kid really got a kick out of it. And he isn't even that big of a Star Wars fan, thank god. But this book beats the tar out of Barney or Elmo anyday of the week.

Thank God it Was Short!

When I first got this book I expected it to be like one of the small paperbacks in the Jedi Apprentice series; small, short, but still good. I didn't realize just how short it was! Nevertheless, I still had high hopes for it, me loving Padmé and all. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. [author:Julianne Balmain|18358] didn't seem to know the character of Padmé very well. She seemed a little off the whole book and Balmain made it seem like Padmé and Amidala were two different people, which made absolutely no sense.

The story was boring, with no emotion, no excitement. She loses the amulet, Padmé and her handmaiden look for it and find it, the end. The amulet is an ugly locket-type thing. In another review it's described as a lump with ropes around it, and that's just what it is.

Maybe this book could be enjoyable for other people, but to me it was a big disappointment.

Must-Have Marketing Book

If you consider yourself a marketer in 2015, you need to know all of the information this book shares. This book is great. I highly recommend it for any interested in the future of marketing and/or digital marketing in general. I will continue to use this book as a resource as I educate myself on these topics.

Really good investment of your time and (minimal) money

The author contacted me for an honest review of a free book he gifted me with because I have an online business and have been active on Linked In and elsewhere, asking and answering questions about many of these questions. I am a big fan of good content, like Online Email Marketing by Ian Brodie, and I am also a fan of comprehensive books instead of grabbing "freebies." You are not going to have a successful business by attending every free webinar. The quality of the content is uneven at the best of times and it is nearly always (Brodie excepted) tainted by the presenter's agenda of getting you to buy in to their multi-thousand-dollar program. Trying to run a real business with bits and bobs of dubious direction is a prescription for failure. And those free e-books that are the Lead Magnet to get you to sign up and waste an hour listening to a thinly-veiled sales pitch? Uniformly useless, thrown together in a short period of time, designed for maximum enticement and minimal or no actual usable content. If that trend could die a well-deserved death, I'll be thrilled. That's why I was interested in this book - hoping for some real content.

Why do I love it?
> It's comprehensive. ALL of the subjects that I want to know about, including some different takes on subjects I know a lot about.
> it's accurate, in the areas where I know what I'm doing.
> the author knows how to teach. You learn step-by-step, with the right amount of material at a time. [You can always tell the newbie writers: it's just a brain dump - useless.]
> you learn how/why - theory - and then you get into how to do it.

If you start at the beginning and work your way through to the end, like I did, you will have an excellent blueprint for a better online presence. I have read it through once and am now working through the parts that I really need help with, slowly and carefully. To paraphrase the author, thinking about it won't make you rich; you have to take effective action.

Your first effective action will be to buy this book.

Valuable and Necessary to Own This Marketing Resource!

This comprehensive book about online marketing is exactly the place to start for the beginning entrepeneur who needs direction and guidance about how to handle this online marketing "stuff." This book discusses everything there is to know at this moment in time about marketing, including lead generation, conversion, digital content creation tools, automation, email marketing, SEO, and social media and other such platforms. And don't forget web metrics and analytics! This book has everything you might need to make basic decisions about what platforms to use and where to find the right information to learn how to use the suggested platforms.

I wish I had a book like this when I first began the entrepeneur journey and looked to create digital content online. I could have saved myself a great deal of time on the learning curve. As things currently stand, I'm glad that I've found the book now, because it provides me with all the other pieces to the online marketing puzzle that I had missed on my first few passes.

I applaud the author's consideration in providing two useful appendices: internet networking basics and website basics. I had to learn what most of these topics and terms meant on my own; others will treasure the resource that this book is.

For those readers who are interested, I have communicated with the author during my reading of the book, and I found him easily accessible and responsive to my questions. I signed up for his newsletter [...], and I have enjoyed the email information that I have received to date.
