Not quite a textbook, not quite a treatise

The other Dimensions of Philosophy books I had seen and used - Van Imwagen's Metaphysics and Kim's Mind books - had been excellent for mid-to-upper level philosophy courses. Both had their axes to grind, but overviews of a wide range of opinions and positions was offered in a way I found balanced and reasonable. Lehrer's book is more Lehrer's pet project. The sections on foundationalism contain a little preamble and a lot of criticism (and I say this as someone who thinks the doctrine is false) and the rest contains a lot of arguments that I recognize as specifically taken from Lehrer's work rather than representing the field as a whole. And as an overview of Lehrer's work, this will not satisfy professional philosophers, for the deeper points and issues are only given a few allusions. This is not to say Lehrer is not an impressive philosopher, but those, like me, who were looking for something to use in a classroom may find this frustrating.

Difficult but possibly worth it...

The theory of knowledge is a hard subject to begin learning; with terms like "justification," "acceptance," "foundationalism," and "externalism" flying around, the philosophical novice may easily get lost in the philosophical whirlwind. Because I read Lehrer's introductory effort painstakingly and carefully, it mitigated my difficulties with learning epistemology.
In a subject containing such obscure terminology, Lehrer starts the reader off on the right foot; if the reader puts enough work in to understand his first chapter, he will have a good understanding of the language of the subject. His remaining chapters do as good a job as can be expected of taking the reader through the various problems that the discussion of different theories of knowledge. Lehrer tries to make it interesting by arguing for his own pet theory (a coherence theory supported by the trustworthiness principle), and his ploy does help the reader pay attention, though in his partisanship he doesn't always present the opposing argument fairly (as in the counterexamples to undefeated justification in chapter 7). On the whole, however, a valient effort and a worthwhile read for anyone interested in epistemology.

Fantastic Book!

Lehrer provides one of the best introductions to epistemology. The book is well suited to advanced undergraduates, graduates and professional philosophers alike. More importantly, it is an improvement on his first edition -- some areas of argument and explication have been cleaned up, and he has added material on recent developments in the field (e.g. contextualism and virtue epistemology). Great book.

Excellent coverage of ML, Java, Prolog, and PL theory

This is one of the most clear and enjoyable Computer Science books I have ever read -- and being a CS Ph.D. student I've read quite a lot! The examples are at the right level of complexity, and the exercises at the end of each chapter are actually (gasp) fun! Alternating theoretical and practical chapters makes for a very balanced reading, where abstract concepts are explained by linking them to real language features.

The book smoothly moves the reader through Standard ML, Java and Prolog in a concise and pleasant manner. Although it doesn't go deep in any of these languages, it provides the reader with enough background to create simple programs and utilize the power of each language; the interested reader can go on to learn advanced language features with the confidence that all the basics have been covered. The book draws clear distinctions between all three languages, each of which represents a different way of thinking about programming. If you are looking for an excellent book on programming languages, or you just want to get a feel about different programming paradigms, this is your book!

A gentle Programming Languages text w/ functional languages

I just finished using this book teaching our Programming Languages course. We easily covered the entire book in a 15 week semester while adding additional material on Formal Semantics and Concurrent Programming. I really loved the book; the writing was engaging (I'm not kidding, this is the best textbook I've ever seen) and the supporting materials were extremely helpful. The greater-than-usual attention to functional programming languages (Webber covers ML, Java and Prolog) was initially the most important feature for me.
The only possible complaint about the text is that it doesn't go into more detail on a number of topics. The next time I teach the class, I would be happy to use it again while providing supplemental material, although I am considering Friedman et al's Essentials of Programming Languages.

This is a great textbook for people wanting to learn the basics of programming computers.It logically presents ML,Java and Prolog.The first sentence states,"Computer programmes are practical magic.".It absolutely is ! You will enjoy reading the historical background on programming too.The ideas really are not difficult to fathom .If you have a desire to learn the foundations of computer language design.For an advanced computer student,this book will be repetitive and frivolous.Yet,i found this basic programming book to be enjoyable and insightful.

I think this material is more detailed than an introduction. It may be an introduction for someone who has been involved with data analysis and data mining. Very technical formulas. Novice should review other materials prior to this book.

An absolute waste of money

The book is so poorly written, I can't even believe it's being sold. It does not seem to have a lick of copyediting/proofreading done to it, and way too many sentences are not even grammatical. An absolute waste of money. I had to abandon it about 30% into it because it was just impossible to get anything out of.
