About the Author

Charles W. L. Hill is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of International Business at the School of Business, University of Washington. Professor Hill received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in Britain. In addition to the University of Washington, he has served on the faculties of UMIST, Texas A&M University, and Michigan State University.
Professor Hill has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science. He has also published two college texts: one on strategic management and the other on international business. Professor Hill has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science. Between 1993 and 1996, he was consulting editor at the Academy of Management Review.
Professor Hill teaches in the MBA, Executive MBA, Management, and Ph.D. programs at the University of Washington. He has received awards for teaching excellence in the MBA, Executive MBA, and Management programs. He has also taught customized executive programs.
Professor Hill works on a consulting basis with a number of organizations. His clients have included ATL, Boeing, BF Goodrich, Hexcel, House of Fraser, Microsoft, Seattle City Light, Tacoma City Light, Thompson Financial Services, and Wizards of the Coast.

A classic for learning International Business!

I have used this book for my International Business course, for more than 15 years. Twenty chapters covering:
Globalization, National Differences in Political, Economic, Legal Systems, Culture, Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility, International Trade Theory, Foreign Direct Investment, Regional Economic Integration, Foreign Exchange Market, International Monetary System, Global Capital Market, Strategy of International Business, Organization, Entry Strategy, Strategic Alliances, Export, Import, Countertrade, Global Production Supply Chain Management, Global Marketing, Global Human Resource Management, Accounting/Finance in International Business.

In addition, I have four teams with 4 or 5 students in each team, performing in-class exercises on: Jim Rogers, World Atlas, E-Leader, and International Trade. Students are mostly non-business majors, and they love this course. I will recommend this book to anyone who likes to learn the foundation of doing international business.

Synopsis of The Story

This allegory, set in the distant future, begins as a wager between Wind and Water over the fate of mankind. Time passes and an extended list of contemporary social ills is confronted by Pawkey Seneschal, a misanthropic Scientist attending a conference in the City. While Wind and Water debate the origins of mankind’s failings as well as the status of their Bet, Pawkey has a revelation. Ultimately, a new Utopia, with populations in the billions is created, currently presided over by Minister Esse. As we meet her, she doesn’t yet realize she is on the threshold of the most important days of her life. Mankind’s Utopia is now at risk, a threat that she announces to the general population, among whom is a rising University student named Muliebris. We see this new Utopia through her eyes, the daily routine of their Society: how people work, love, procreate, entertain themselves, and learn; how they interact with each other, the elements, and other species; their health and diets; their materialism and homes. But their Utopia is flawed, they eventually learn; the true origins of the new Order have remained a secret for over a thousand years. Discover the costs of the transition, how and why billions perished, and prepare to be stunned by the ending. Even then you will have to step back and consider how this all fits together. In this Utopia, even the mundane is fresh.

One to make you think, laugh, cry, and hope.

Xen is a stunner! A friend, female, recommended it to me. I will never be able to think about women the same way, after pouring through this work, which was probably her intention. I have already read it twice from cover to cover and continue to glance through it. There are parts that continue to crack me up, each and every time. I have laughed until I thought I was going to cry. Other parts are so ghoulish that I am haunted by the visual imagery.

The vocabulary is intense and I have had to look up many words, like another reviewer noted. But I could have glossed over them and still gotten the point overall. I wonder, how could anyone with such an active imagination be so politically incorrect these days?

This novel will make a lot of people mad. There is something to offend everyone. For example, Solomon's definition of religion is bound to ruffle the feathers of a certain Hollywood producer and those of his faithful, particularly at this time of year. But not just religion is lampooned. So are politics of either and any persuasion, the media, commercialism, and anyone who is closed minded.

Others, and I would like to count myself among them, will get past the anger that caused me to initially throw it down a bunch of times. So much of what he says is so true, although I certainly can't agree with everything.

Still others will be thumping their chests (? breasts) and saying, 'see, we told you so!'

This book has just about everything...the vocabulary, food for thought, a puzzle for which I remain clueless despite multiple cryptographic computer trials (and I am a computer analyst by trade), and it even provides for good causes. The author, sorry 'translator', states that 10% of all proceeds will go to charities!!

If you like to sink your teeth into a good read that can be finished in a couple evenings, buy Xen. You won't be disappointed.

Xen: A Novel from the Future is an intriguing science fiction tale about a scientist, Pawkey Seneschal, who loathes humanity's evils so much that he unveils a means to forever rid all humanity of its hate, prejudice, and xenophobia. The secret lies within the "Ten Books of Xen", which are intertwined in a mythical tale about the repeated rebirth of Mankind - N + 1 times. Partly a puzzle for the reader to solve, partly a vision of an utopian future just within humanity's grasp, and partly a reexamination of all that is familiar in ordinary life, Xen is a triumph expressing a crucial message counter-culture and would-be world-transformers of all walks of life, from humanitarians and pacifists to feminists and libertarians.

Douglas Adams meets Jon Stewart...

This is NOT your typical, lazy Saturday afternoon novel, although that's when I chose to read it - the first time. My pledge to myself is to read it on as many free Saturday afternoons I have until I solve that puzzle. I do love a great mystery.

So I thank the author for shifting my Saturdays & some of my perspectives; for giving me cause to rejoin the "look it up club"; and for my renewed respect for Water (and Wind).

I hope Tim Burton discovers this book!

Viviane K. Namaste has a Ph.D. in semiotics from the Université du Québec à Montréal. She coordinates a community-based transsexual health care project of CACTUS- Montréal, and is involved with different advisory committees and research initiatives related to prisons, transsexual health, HIV, prostitution, and harm reduction.

Whether a Transsexual, or Transgender person, or an Ally, or just curious; it would be hard to find a more thorough investigation of how we as Trans Folk are attacked, marginalized, or ignored socially and institutionally. Dr. Namaste writes from what she knows; and her research was specific to Canada (Ontario & Quebec) but the specifics of the situation aren't that different from what we deal with in the U.S. People of Color, those that are poor & can't get employment or Healthcare, sexworkers are shunned by society and the System. Internationally Trans Healthcare adheres to the WPATH guidelines as enumerated in the Harry Benjamin Standards of Care, the starting point is that Gender Identity Disorder (now, Dysphoria) is classed as a Mental Condition. In order to qualify one must meet the preconceived expectations of a Clinician; including THEIR idea of what a Female should look like. If we don't qualify to enter the System and get Medical care, we are to them invisible, and if attacked we are on our own, the police won't help. The problem/the Erasure is Systemic!

A Study of the Social Conditions of TG People in N. America

First, this is one of the few volumes I've read where the situation of transgenderists/transsexuals in Canada is explored with a certain depth. The third part of the book (Research) is invaluable.
Thanks to Dr. Namaste, we have an overview of the situation of TG/TS people with respect to:
Violence: Chapter 6, Genderbashing, focuses on the situation of TG sex-workers in Montréal and how they're related to the gay communities by the police -basically, how they are erased from view in statistics and studies;
Access to government programs in Canada: Chapter 7, Access Denied, deals with the policies of the GIC of the Clark Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto -how in the screening process and help system the input of the TS hirself is ignored (only three GIC clinics in Canada can recommend a person for government-sponsored SRS: in Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver);
Treatment of TS/TG people in these clinics: Chapter 8, Clinical Research or Community Health? -this chapter mainly delves into the way GICs are seen by the people receiving or who have received services at them at some point, in this sense it is a first;
The bureaucracy trap and how it influences care: Chapter 9, The Administration of Erasure -again centred on HIV/AIDS as a problem among TG sex workers in Québec, although the difficulties in dealing with the system are also explored.
Overall, this book is a must for any serious researcher and transsexuals/transgenderists living in Canada. The theories in the book itself (after all, Dr. Namaste is a semiotist with training in sociology) come across as rather vague and not well-founded on the research presented, in my opinion. Even so, it is a good starting point for future research.
A note: I found quite upsetting the statistics of "gaybashing" as directed to TG people. It seems that people attack others not on the basis of their sexual preferences as much as they do for their perceived gender identity. I.e., a gay male who acts masculine is less likely to be attacked than a male-to-female transgenderists who is attracted to women. That you give the "wrong" public image is what irks bigots the most. And even worse in the case of TG/TS visible minorities enaged in the sex trade:
"At one meeting I attended, residents discussed various strategies that could be employed to evict sex workers from the area. One man stood up and spoke about his plan to take a baseball bat and assault two Haitian transgendered prostitutes, known to work on the corner of Ontario and Panet Streets. Like many perpetrators of queer-bashing who target black gay men as easy victims, this attacker viewed black transgendered women as those least likely to retaliate and most worthy of assault. Notwithstanding the fact that such violence occurs within the gay village, it cannot be explained as an instance of homophobia. Rather, this proposed assault emphasizes the importance of accounting for gender, race, class, and public space in an analysis of violence." [Invisible lives, p. 154.]
Dr. Namaste had also found that gay males "of colour" are more likely to be attacked within the "gay villages" (20% vs. 9% for Caucasians). Since TG/TS males are perceived as "gay" so far they don't pass, for TG visible minorities it's like having three strikes against: colored, gay and transgendered.
People belonging to minority ethnic groups are also much less likely to go to the police -the worst horror stories of police abuse in this book are told by visible minorities, in one case a Native TS woman who was not a prostitute: "People like you should be killed at birth." [p. 169.] If after being the object of attack by a group of bigots, you are going to be attacked by the police, then what's the point of calling them?
This is one of the very few books that at least explores in part what it means to be TG and coloured in a sexist/racist society like Canada.

A Mixed Reaction

Namaste's main thesis -- that transsexuals are produced through systems of erasure -- is intriguing, and she does a fairly good job of arguing for it, especially in the final "Research" section of the book. Namaste also does a good job of showing how the Canadian trans scene is importantly different from that in the U.S. Unfortunately, Namaste has a tendency to misrepresent other authors, she falsely represents transsexuals as if we all agreed with one another when it suits her purposes, she over-simplifies in describing queer theory and social sciences, her writing is repetitive at places, and she often jumps to unwarranted conclusions. Still, anyone with a serious interest in transgender studies should read this book.

About the Author
Fred W. Allendorf is a Regents Professor at the University of Montana and a Professorial Research Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.  He has published over 200 articles on the population genetics and conservation of fish, amphibians, mammals, invertebrates, and plants.  He is a past President of the American Genetic Association, and has served as Director of the Population Biology Program of the National Science Foundation.  He has taught conservation genetics at the University of Montana, University of Oregon, University of Minnesota, University of Western Australia, Victoria University of Wellington, and the US National Conservation Training Center.

Gordon Luikart is an Associate Professor at the Flathead Lake Biological Station of the University of Montana and a Visiting Scientist in the Center for Investigation of Biodiversity and Genetic Resources at the University of Porto, Portugal.  He is also an award winning (Bronze Medal) Research Scientist with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique at the University Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France. His research focuses on the conservation and genetics of wild and domestic animals, and includes over 100 publications.  He was a Fulbright Scholar at La Trobe University, Melbourne, and he is a member of the IUCN Specialist Group for Caprinae (mountain ungulates) conservation.

Sally N. Aitken is a Professor in the Department of Forest Sciences and Director of the Centre for Forest Conservation Genetics at the University of British Columbia. She studies the population, conservation, ecological genetics, and genomics of forest trees. She received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and she was a faculty member at Oregon State University. She has received the Canadian Forestry Scientific Achievement Award, a Killam Faculty Research Fellowship, and a Killam Teaching Prize. She teaches forest biology, alpine ecology, and conservation genetics, and she is involved in forest genetic conservation initiatives in North America and Europe.

About the Author

Known for his scrupulous devotion to his art and perfectionist style, French writer Gustave Flaubert is counted among the greatest Western novelists, and influenced such writers as Franz Kafka and J. M. Coetzee. Flaubert is best known for Madame Bovary, for which he was prosecuted (and acquitted) for offending public morals. His other works of note include Memoirs of a Madman, November, Salammb?, Sentimental Education, and The Temptation of Saint Anthony. His work has been widely adapted for the stage and screen. Flaubert died in 1880.

A beautifully produced book!

The book looks beautiful and is a high quality production, although it is a little thick. It is well laid out. The producer has taken an existing translation and married it with the original French text. While the translation is not word for word, it captures the author's intent. This was a little off putting as I would occasionally glance to the English side to figure out what a word meant and it might not be there, or might not be in the place it is in the English text.

My goal is to learn how to read French, and to do so you need to learn to figure out words in context. This edition really helps to achieve that goal. In retrospect I think if I had an exact translation of the French into English it would render the English text extremely clumsy and unreadable. But this was disorientating to begin with.

All in all I am very happy with this edition.
