The novel is full of the juicy romantic entanglements, family dysfunction, and high drama that readers have come to anticipate. The novel is not without its shortcomings; most critics noted the occasional clunky writing and predictable plot line. After all, McMillan's characters are the same as before--older and heavier, perhaps, but not necessarily happier or wiser. Still, the novel is entertaining, escapist fare, and "Getting to Happy is pretty much required reading for anyone who cared about Waiting to Exhale" (Miami Herald).

Fifteen years after the success of Waiting to Exhale (including a film version), McMillan returns to her quartet of friends, living the black middle-class good life—with all its ups and downs—in Phoenix, Arizona. Savannah, who still narrates most chapters, is working for a local television station and slowly watching the thrill leach out of her marriage, which came late in life when she’d given up on her prospects. She’s now facing the realities of dating in middle age (from Viagra to online dating services). Her friend Robin is raising a teenage daughter and is so stressed by her boring accountant job that she’s hooked on shopping and an assortment of pills. Bernadine is recovering from the spectacular failure of her second marriage and coping with the knowledge that her daughter is gay. Gloria has a successful hair salon, beautiful grandchildren, and a wonderful marriage, until disaster strikes. Revisiting the ladies from Waiting to Exhale after fifteen years, McMillan explores the necessity of turning lemons into lemonade. Much has changed in the lives of the four Phoenix friends, Robin, Savannah, Gloria and Bernadine, marriages and romances run aground, careers in limbo, children grown and on their own. Although the women are as close as ever, each freely acknowledges that life has intruded, their meetings less frequent, the ups and downs of daily demands taking a toll. Now each of the friends is faced with a problem, some more devastating than others, challenged to reinvent themselves to survive the coming years. It is how these four work through their issues that so defines this particular group of friends, the energy, humor, loyalty and courage that it takes to face the world at fifty, with or without a man.

One by one, we are reintroduced to these fabulous, flawed creatures, from the still-beautiful but unattached Robin to the frustrated Savannah to a now bitter Bernadine and the ever-lovable Gloria. While near-grown children inspire both pride and awe, the demands of extended family and ex-husbands can get on anyone's last nerve. McMillan is on intimate terms with these characters, their fears, frustrations and reactions to the inevitable challenges they face. With her customary compassion for the plight of these larger-than-life women, married or single, this is a story that rings with authenticity. Life comes in all sizes and shapes, delivering joy and sorrow with equal abandon and these friends are spared none of the experiences that come with time. Once again, it is their love for one another that proves the most healing balm in any situation.

While these Phoenix residents have for the most part landed on their feet in troubled economic times, finances are irrelevant when the world weighs heavy on their shoulders. None has escaped unscathed the random cruelties of fate, but McMillan works her magic in the territory of the human spirit, the language of love and forgiveness a powerful remedy for grief. Didn't Get to Happy

I was soooo looking forward to reading this book, but was soooo disappointed. I thought my 4 favorite characters were finally going to be "happy" and instead the book was about more doom and gloom for them all. Most important, the doom and gloom wasn't even drama that captured my interest. I was hoping that they all would have "grown" from the first book and it seemed to me they didn't. The one good thing about the book was that McMillan stayed true to the personalities of the characters from the first book.

Lackluster Sequel

I'm going to keep this short and will try not to ruin the story for those who have not read this book.

I watched Waiting to Exhale in movie theaters several years before I ever read the book. By then I had read several other books by her as well. From the perspective of a writer, I loved how she constructed sentences and gradually revealed what made her characters tick. Her prose was funny, smart and sassy. Sadly, this book falls way short. Although Terry hasn't lost her touch with the dialogue, the story was often boring.

Because everyone was going through some kind of crisis, none of the problems got the treatment/resolution they deserved. It felt rushed and haphazard.

This book will no doubt be made into a movie. I might check it out on DVD.

PAUL D. LAPIDES, CPA, MBA, is a professor of management and entrepreneurship at the Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University (Georgia) where he founded and serves as Director of the nationally recognized Corporate Governance Center.

Unreadable and laborious

I had to get this book for a continuing education course and we've been required to read it. I think I'd rather have a root canal. Any day. It's crammed with information with little to no examples to illuminate. The verbiage is needlessly redundant, it's very hard to read and process. And don't get me started about the diagrams - like complicated little spiderwebs that go no-where and teach nothing.
The authors have managed to take an interesting topic and field and turn it into a snoozefest.

What a remarkable book! If you teach courses in the Study of Religions or are simply an inquisitive reader interested in exploring the ways in which some major religious traditions around the world have conceptualized the Ultimate Reality (God, Nirvana, Brahman, etc.), you might find Ford’s new book extremely helpful. Here are some of its strengths:

1. As indicated by the title, the book covers the Divine Quest, both East and West, which fills an important gap in existing publications on the subject, which normally deal only with monotheistic traditions. Part One introduces the method of approaching the Ultimate. Part Two is dedicated to the evolution of the concept of God from Early Judaism to Postmodern Christianity. Part Three deals with Hindu traditions. Part Four covers the rich diversity within Buddhism. Part Five is truly a prize for the patient reader who has labored through the complexities of specific traditions; titled “Reflections on the Divine Quest,” it offers illuminating insights about what to make of the multiplicity of views uncovered by preceding chapters.

2. In contrast to many current works, especially by the so-called New Atheists, Ford’s method is not reductionistic. While utilizing the category of religious imagination as a historically and culturally conditioned factor in shaping religious ideas, the author does not equate imagination with mere fancy. Second, he is careful not to limit religion to any one particular function (sociological, psychological, or cognitive, etc.). Third, Ford’s explicit aim is to understand religious traditions, not to theologize or decide the truth of the matter – an admirable approach that equips the reader with a solid methodology and erudite, in-depth coverage of religions, while also leaving ample room for their own discovery and assessment. Accordingly, the author’s concluding reflections are suggestive rather than controlling, more like a reminder of our epistemic limits and a “measure of humility required to avoid the hazards of absolutism.” He says, “The Divine quest is indeed just that, a quest—ongoing, dialectical, contingent, and perhaps like the bodhisattva’s Great Vows, never to be fully realized” (p. 338).

3. Ford demonstrates that “Ultimate Reality is a fluid category not just between but also within traditions.” He shows in great detail how ideas about the Ultimate, far from being static, singular, and uniform, evolve historically with the culture of which they are an interdependent part.
