What a remarkable book! If you teach courses in the Study of Religions or are simply an inquisitive reader interested in exploring the ways in which some major religious traditions around the world have conceptualized the Ultimate Reality (God, Nirvana, Brahman, etc.), you might find Ford’s new book extremely helpful. Here are some of its strengths:
1. As indicated by the title, the book covers the Divine Quest, both East and West, which fills an important gap in existing publications on the subject, which normally deal only with monotheistic traditions. Part One introduces the method of approaching the Ultimate. Part Two is dedicated to the evolution of the concept of God from Early Judaism to Postmodern Christianity. Part Three deals with Hindu traditions. Part Four covers the rich diversity within Buddhism. Part Five is truly a prize for the patient reader who has labored through the complexities of specific traditions; titled “Reflections on the Divine Quest,” it offers illuminating insights about what to make of the multiplicity of views uncovered by preceding chapters.
2. In contrast to many current works, especially by the so-called New Atheists, Ford’s method is not reductionistic. While utilizing the category of religious imagination as a historically and culturally conditioned factor in shaping religious ideas, the author does not equate imagination with mere fancy. Second, he is careful not to limit religion to any one particular function (sociological, psychological, or cognitive, etc.). Third, Ford’s explicit aim is to understand religious traditions, not to theologize or decide the truth of the matter – an admirable approach that equips the reader with a solid methodology and erudite, in-depth coverage of religions, while also leaving ample room for their own discovery and assessment. Accordingly, the author’s concluding reflections are suggestive rather than controlling, more like a reminder of our epistemic limits and a “measure of humility required to avoid the hazards of absolutism.” He says, “The Divine quest is indeed just that, a quest—ongoing, dialectical, contingent, and perhaps like the bodhisattva’s Great Vows, never to be fully realized” (p. 338).
3. Ford demonstrates that “Ultimate Reality is a fluid category not just between but also within traditions.” He shows in great detail how ideas about the Ultimate, far from being static, singular, and uniform, evolve historically with the culture of which they are an interdependent part.
