About the Author
New York Times best-selling author Robert Venditti broke into comics the old fashioned way- by starting out in the mailroom. He began working for publisher Top Shelf Productions in 2002, and within a few months sold them the script for The Surrogates, his first comic book series. The story was later adapted into a feature film starring Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames. Venditti went on to write the original graphic novel The Homeland Directive, as well as the graphic novel adaptations of Rick Riordan’s bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians novels. In 2012, he helped relaunch Valiant Entertainment’s comic book universe by writing their flagship title, X-O Manowar. Venditti currently writes GREEN LANTERN and THE FLASH for DC Comics. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Van Jensen is a former newspaper crime reporter and magazine editor who broke into comics as the writer of Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer, which was named one of YALSA’s Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens. He also has written The Leg: The Remarkable Reappearance of Santa Anna’s Disembodied Limb, and GREEN LANTERN CORPS and THE FLASH for DC Comics. A native of western Nebraska, Jensen now lives in Atlanta.

Flash vs Future Flash

I honestly haven’t bought an issue of The Flash since the 1980’s but I wanted to brush up on the character in preparation for the upcoming Justice League movie and Flash movie in 2018. I was impressed by the 2009/2010 Flash: Rebirth by Geoff Johns and the Robert Venditti run has been getting some very good reviews on Amazon. My initial reaction to Volume 6 ‘Out of Time’ was not positive. The art looks really amateurish and the dialogue left something to be desired. However, as I continued to read through it I became more impressed by the intriguing plot.

There are two Flashes in Out of Time, a present day version and a version from 20 years in the future who is trying to repair damage to the speed force that occurred in the present time. The future Barry Allen has abandoned his no killing rule and wants to repair tragedies that he couldn’t prevent due to time bleeding from the speed force. There is an obvious contrast between the present day Flash who makes it very explicit that he never, under any circumstances kills, and the future Flash who repeatedly kills major members of his rogues gallery.

Time travel stories generally get a bit confusing and this one is no exception. The story jumps back and forth between present day Flash, solving a crime involving stolen weapons from a group of villains he fought, as well as getting to know Wally West who is now black and having some issues with a grudge against the Flash. Meanwhile, the future Flash is working his way back through time on an inevitable collision course with the present day Flash. As in many of my favorite stories there is ambiguity as to whether the Flash from the future is a villain or hero. After all he is the actual Barry Allen.

There are some definite plot holes which is common in time travel stories. For instance, why would Barry Allen be so broken up over the death of Wally West, even 20 years later, since according to this timeline he barely knew the young boy? Also, if the future Flash fixes the speed force in the present he would never have a reason to go back which creates the obvious time loop. There is an attempt by the author to address this but simply sweeping it under the carpet doesn’t solve it. It also bothered me that the Flash is constantly having long conversations with villains even as he’s fighting them at super speed.

All in all I liked this volume. It has a nice Scooby Doo type mystery with a pretty good payoff. The pacing is very good and Venditti does a nice job of balancing the two main story arcs. I enjoyed the story enough that I read through it twice just to try and pick up things in the somewhat complex plot that I missed the first time. For instance the first time I read it I didn’t notice that there were actually TWO future flashes. I’m definitely interested in picking up future volumes even if the art really isn’t my cup of tea. It’s actually not that bad when the fights are going on and characters are wearing masks. The artist is just not that good at rendering faces.

I am new to the world of comics, so what I thought of this vol. and what you might think of this vol. will probably be different I was reading an e-copy of this and I couldn’t help, but notice how great the colors looked. I don’t know how that will translate to the paper, but I hope that it will look the same. It might seem a little silly to you, but the books I read have only words and it was nice to read something in color.
I started the comics because of the show, but I am staying in the story. Things might have started slow but after a while things got very interesting. The cliffhanger in the end makes me to want to read the next volume, which I guess is the reason it ends in that way. I will make sure to add this comic to my library.

This was an awesome story line! I felt a little confused here and there, like I should have read the justice league or something & not just flash volume 5 and then I would have understood better. I loved the cameo appearance
